3 Cities Not to Miss When You’re in Spain (forget Madrid and Barcelona!)

Spain attracts far too man package tourists and not nearly enough travelers considering the wealth of sights they have to offer. So I’m gonna go out on a limb and say forget Madrid and Barcelona and check out these 3 diamonds:
Cadiz: The oldest city in Europe and jam packed full of stuff to see. Cadiz is found on the Atlantic coast of Spain between Gibraltar and Portugal.
The best places to visit in Cadiz and the most important tourists sites include the The San Sebastian Fortress which is located on a steep cliff at Caleta beach, in front of the Santa Catalina Castle, over a small island from which it protected the northern front of Cadiz’s city. This castle is joined to the mainland by a seaside drive, which makes it possible not to be isolated during the high tide. This popular beach has all types of facilities: bars, open-air drinks stalls, etc. It has two fortifications: the and the Castle of San Sebastián on the two, opposite ends of the cove. It has a pleasant promenade with palm trees and street lighting skirting the coast.
Also, if you have time check out the Costa de la Luz, divided between the provinces of Huelva and Cádiz, also offers a host of destinations for culture and leisure. The Doñana National Park, has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO
Salamanca: This classic Spanish City has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Situated 213kms (131) miles from Madrid in the western central region of Spain in Castile y Leon, Salamanca has been an important city for over 2000 years. Salamanca University was the first to be founded in Spain and the fifth oldest in the western world.
Salamanca it is said was the birth place of the Spanish language with the production of the first Grammar of the Castilian Language in the 15th century, which became the template and reason for its ability to spread over the world.
Why not enjoy a peaceful day strolling around the cobbled streets of the historic quarter and visiting the university and the city’s two cathedrals with their characteristic golden stone. Try out the secrets of the many beautiful historic buildings. Also, in the historic quarter Visit the Plaza Mayor, one of the most beautiful squares in the whole of Europe. The square is decorated with carved medallions of famous Spanish people like the writer Miguel de Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote
Also, one quirky thing to check out is the Casa de las Conchas (the House of Shells). We’re bound to be captivated by this original building decorated with thousands of shells which were used as a token of the marriage between two members of the nobility.
Malaga: When arriving at Malaga airport, most people turn right and head for the Costa del Sol and forget that Malaga the city even exists! It’s a city with a thriving port and traffic clogged streets but there is another side to Malaga. Exploring the honeycomb of Malaga’s back streets and discovering an intriguing choice of shops, restaurants and tapas bars can be fun.
There is an historic side too with a fortress that dates back to 1065. Near here is a castle that was rebuilt by the Moors in the 14th century and is now a traditional Parador (hotel); worth a visit if only for the views.
Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga and the city boasts several galleries that feature his work including the 16th century Museum of Fine Arts
There’s a lot more to Malaga than people think, so grab yourself some transport (expedia car hire for example) and set out to explore this very cool place.
So folks, it’s not all about Barcelona, Madrid and beach holidays. Spain has a lot to offer every type of traveler not get out there an explore! Happy travels
