What a wonderful place New York City is. Let’s be honest, for those of us who incline more towards visiting cities than countryside, it’s paradise. During our stay in New York apartments we walk out of our door and we see the busy streets full of life and we contemplate the hundreds of possibilities that we have to do, no matter our tastes, no matter the time we’ve got and no matter our budget. One thing that’s becoming more and more popular around the western world is Asian cuisine. Its delicious variety of ingredients make it suitable for all gastronomic tastes, no matter what your preference is. In New York, being such a cosmopolitan city, we can find some of the best Asian restaurants in the world, almost as authentic as if we were eating in the country of origin.

If we want to sample the most authentic Chinese cuisine, we must go to Chinatown. There are so many restaurants there that choosing one becomes a bit of an impossible task, but that’s what we’re here for. Head over to 13 Doyers Street just off Bowery and go to Nom Wah Tea Parlor. From the outside it might not look luxurious but the food inside is great. Try the roast pork buns and the pork or shrimp shiu mai. 10.30am-9pm.

We couldn’t recommend Asian restaurants without recommending a Japanese one and one of the best places to eat authentic Japanese cuisine is Soba Nippon. Soba is the star dish here and it will be the best that you’ve eaten so far, especially in a broth. Excellent sushi as well although it’s not the house speciality, rather Japanese cooked dishes, mostly delicious fish and seafood. Find Soba Nippon at 19 W 52nd Street. For traditional sushi lovers, no better place than 15 East, on 15 E 15th street, with its authentic Japanese interior and seating, for the ultimate sushi experience.

A type of Asian cuisine which is fast growing is Korean cuisine. This cuisine based mostly on rice, vegetables and meats can also be found in New York. Right in the heart of Koreatown we find Cho Dang Goi, whose kimchi and pork stews with rice dishes are the star of the show. This restaurant will hook you on Korean food, with all the variants available here that come with free appetizers. Expect mid-range prices. It’s on 35 W 35th street.

Thai food has always been a hit amongst Asian food lovers and for the best Thai experience in NYC, we have to go all the way to Queens to find Ayada, where no concessions are made to the Western tastes for a true Thai food experience. Try its different curries if you enjoy spicy food or the fried pork and noodle ones if you don’t. There’s an infinity of dishes and the waiters will help you choose. Find it at 7708 Woodside Avenue.

Another fast growing trend is Vietnamese food. Nha Trang One offers what they say is the most authentic one this side of Vietnam, and the prices seem out of there too, being ridiculously low. Choose from their large variety of pho (noodle soup), especially the suon nuong one (pork chop) along with summer rolls or the increasingly popular bánh mi sandwiches with pork meat inside. Nha Trang One is at 87 Baxter Street in Manhattan.

East Asian food is a delightful way of eating and sampling some of the most intense and delicious flavours from the Far East. Whether it’s Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai or Vietnamese, you can find some of the best Asian restaurants when you rent apartments in New York.

Napa Valley

1)   Napa Valley:

Still in the Bay Area, still an awesome climate but with much, much more wine (over 200 wineries!). They’ve got hot springs, mud baths, cycle tours, hiking tours, nice hotels and if that’s not enough you can always get drunk on amazing booze.

2)   Santa Cruz:

Chilled out surfer town just north of Monetery bay. Santa Cruz is home to huge misty forest, redwood trees, laid back cafes and awesome surf. It can be done as a day trip with no worries, but don’t plan on going back too soon, this place is addictive! Hit the Santa Cruz boardwalk and mix with the cool kids.

3)   Sacramento:

The capital of California, Sacramento is always high on the list of places to visit in the state. The Old Sacramento, waterfront is a real blast from the past, an Old Western-style district that’s really alive on evenings and weekends. There’s also great rafting (my favourite pastime) in the area too.

4)   Yosemite National Park:

This one might be stretching the ‘2 hours driving’ rule but it’s worth it, just find a good car rental place. You may spend around 8 hours on the road there and back but the UNESCO world heritage site is world famous for it’s granite cliffs, waterfalls, streams and all around amazing scenery, if you’re in the San Fran area, you must, must, must check this out!

5) Monterey:

A gorgeous coastal city, Monterey is home to one of the best aquariums in the US – the Monterey Bay Aquarium ($30 ticket though, ouch!) and you can waltz down to the wharf to see the sea lions lounging about all day, if you’re lucky you’ll spot some sea otters too. There’s also good scuba and cool whale watching tours departing from fisherman’s wharf.

Ripley's Believe It or Not in Orlando

1)   Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Orlando Odditorium:

Before we get too deep into our intellectual tour we can break outselves in easy with a fun visit to Ripleys ‘museum’. These places are becoming world famous, dotted all over the globe, giving a new spin on the museum frequenting public. Just to catch their gist, their tag-line is “What do an 8-foot long fish, a 7-legged sheep and a mural made from 8,500 playing cards have in common? They’re all new exhibits in a revamped Ripley’s Believe It or Not!” certainly fun, if not so educational!

2)   The Orlando Science Center:

As we slowly delve into more educational venues, the Orlando science center is a great bridge, loads of fun but still with an educational spine. The Science Center encourages learning in a fun way and it’s certainly big enough to do the trick with four floors of crazy exhibits, awesome giant screen movies and engaging live programming, great for a rainy day.

3)   Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art:

One for the art fans here, the Museum’s holdings include a major collection of American art pottery and representative collections of late 19th- and early 20th-century American painting, graphics, and decorative art. They also hold the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany. If you don’t know who that is, it’s probably not up your street (listen to your own advice johnny!). Much too intellectual for me, but world famous none-the-less.

4)   Orange County Regional History Center:

This place offers a great insight into the areas past, right up to the present. They include information on everything from the time of the native Seminole Indians to the founding of the city to the Civil Rights era to the Disney period to today. Pretty interesting stuff.

5)   Cornell Fine Arts Museum:

This is actually part of Rollins college, but the museum itself features items from Cornell’s renowned permanent collection. After a session here, you’ll be the most intelligent person you know! They appeal to all art fans with original and traveling exhibitions change seasonally and feature outstanding works of art for all tastes, from the early Renaissance to cutting-edge contemporary.

So next time you think of Orlando, forget about the big mac meal and the picture with Mickey Mouse, there’s a lot more to it than that. There are so many cheap flights to Orlando right not that it’s just got a lot closer too. Happy travels!

After pretending to be a boyband in Vegas, and my mate ending up getting hitched, it’s always gonna hold a place close to my heart, with so many cheap flights to Vegas, there’s no excuse not to join the party. But that doesn’t mean I want to burn my cash there, and neither should you guys, so if you venture to Sin City, check out these 4 ass-kickingly free shows to scrounge from:

Masquerade Show in the Sky – Rio:

Big claims for this to be the best free show in Las Vegas, every night offers a unique performance, with three different shows featuring stunning dancers in eye-popping costume fashions from the likes of DKNY and Victoria’s Secret (no need to thank me guys).  These guys strut their stuff from 6pm-11pm, Thursday to Saturday.

Sirens of TI – Treasure Island:

No need for public transport or entry tickets for this bad boy, located right on the strip, Sirens of TI is in full force every night. Now after Victoria’s Secret making an appearance in my last free suggestion, this might tip my journalistic leanings to the perverted edge BUT here we go… The show focuses around a group of sensual and tempting sirens trying to lure in some pirates, this is definitely more of an adult show than a family performance. Arrive early to get a good spot.

Circus Circus:

World class circus acts in the world’s largest permanent circus. From 11am, every 30 minutes Aerialists, jugglers, acrobats and trapeze artists from all around the world take the stage and there’s only one thing better than hot chicks and cool guys flipping inside out, and that’s free hot chicks and cool guys. Roll up, roll up – this place is rocking.

I Lost my M in Vegas – M&M World:

Right next to the MGM Casino is a big kids dream – M&M world (yep, the candy!). M&M world offers up a free 3D movie every day. It can only be described as a mouth wateringly intricate monument to chocolate, with four stories and 28,000 feet of space! Enough free chocolate is kicking around so skip dinner!

1)   Everland, South Korea:

One of my favrouite countries, and an English teachers dream, South Korea rarely drops the ball with anything and they’ve got this park spot on. South Korea’s first theme park opened in 1976 as Yongin Farmland. Six years ago it was bought by a division of Samsung and transformed into the Everland theme park

Everland sprawls across 3,700 acres and consists of three theme parks: Festival World, Caribbean Bay (water park) and the Speedway. Festival World has 40 theme attractions as well as a zoo.

2)   Ferrari World, Abu Dhabi:

The most recent addition to the list, and home to the Formula Rossa, which is the fastest roller coaster in the world with a whopping speed of 240 km/ hour and the G-Force, the tower of speed Ferrari World is a fast paced frenzy. It’s not cheap at nearly $80 a ticket but 240 km/h suggests it’s worth it!

From getting a run-through of a Ferrari factory to almost living its history and legendary moments and a live, interactive, theatre experience to a simulated ride with the champions, this park goes all out to charm Ferrari fanatics. The largest indoor theme park in the world, its iconic roof is modeled after the side profile of a Ferrari GT. Sexy.

3)   Disney World, Orlando, Florida:

The theme park to end all theme parks? Possibly, everyone’s mate Walt really new how to draw the crowds and everyone who comes to Florida hits up Disney world.

What can we possibly say about Disney that hasn’t been said before? There’s a reason why when most people think of “theme park” they think of Disney. Nobody does it better. All four locations (Anaheim, Calif., Orlando, Fla., Tokyo and Paris) are staggeringly huge and have everything from rides, games, restaurants, animals and water parks to learning centers and spas, all with the backdrop of the ubiquitous mouse and kids clamoring for Disney-related merchandise. If this doesn’t make you want a cheap flight to Florida, I don’t know what will!

4)   Ocean Park, Hong Kong:

Visiting the largest marine theatre is surely the coolest way to tackle the manic Hong Kong heat. With its state-of-the-art marine displays that include Shark Aquariums, Dolphin shows and a terrific and sci-fi styled Jellyfish exhibit, Ocean Park is both entertaining and educational.  The park has two parts to it – the summit and the waterfront. You can take a shuttle bus, the cable car or Ocean Express to go from one part to another.  If you don’t want to waste your time going to and fro, it’s advisable to move from one part to the other only once.

If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, head to Thrill Mountain on the Summit, for a ride on The Flash which will spin you while turning you 360 degrees, the Mine Train in Adventure Land; and the Dragon Roller Coaster. The roller coaters offer great views of the Repulse Bay, Deep Water Bay, South China Sea and the Aberdeen Bay. There’s loads of cool stuff to do in Hong Kong, Ocean park is certainly one of them.

5)   Cedar Point, Cleveland, USA

If you’re a roller coaster junkie and love that sinking, lurching feeling in the pit of your stomach, then Cedar Point is the place for you. The park has more roller coasters–15–and rides–68–than any other park in the world. It now has the Wicked Twister, which claims to be the world’s tallest. Riders will launch out of the station at 50 mph and up a 90-degree twisting tower. As the train slows near the top of the U-shaped track, riders experience “air time,” the feeling of floating in air, before zooming up another tower and spiraling down…backward.

As if that’s not enough, the train will go up and down the towers five times at a maximum speed of 72 mph, and twists 450 degrees. There is also an 18-acre water park area, called Soak City.

Chamonix

Chamonix is not for the faint-hearted. The slopes are groomed but largely unmanicured – a bit like the bars and clubs. Expect live music, happy hours and early bird food deals aplenty. Many venues stay open until 4am so you can limber up those stiff limbs on the dance floor.

Jackson Hole

This resort is for the cowboys. Jackson Hole Mountain offers mostly advanced terrain and boasts the longest, steepest vertical slope in the US.  Ride the aerial tram for the 12 minute ride to the top of Rendezvous Mountain and explore unmarked trails, if you’ve got the skills.

Whistler-Blackcomb

A couple of hours north of Vancouver, Whistler-Blackcomb has one of the best kids ski/snowboard programs in the world. With a children’s adventure park leading through an enchanted forest, a ski-through castle and miniature fort on offer, we can see why.

Choose from out of town accommodation with a shuttle-bus service to the gondolas or ski-in, ski-out lodging. Plus, the resort is completely dog-friendly so Fido won’t get left behind.

5) Victoria Falls Bungee, Zimbabwe/Zambian border (110m/360feet):
A bit of a controversial choice as this has featured quite heavily in the new recently when a girl’s bungee cord snapped! Also, it’s not in the top 5 highest bungees in the world but it’s gotta be the most beautiful. 111M of sheer fear as you jump of Victoria Bridge, into a circular rainbow thanks to the mist caused by the falls. When your finished you can see Victoria falls as your backdrop, nothing short of amazing.

4) Bloukrans Bridge, South Africa – (216 m/708 feet):
The world’s highest single span arch bridge, the Bloukrans Bridge bungee is the third highest bungee in the world at 708 feet (216 m). It’s also the highest point in the world from which you can bungee off, and formally the highest bungee jump in the world.

3) Verzasca Dam, Switzerland – (220 m/720 feet):
It found mainstream fame with the opening sequence of the Bond movie Goldeneye, the Verzasca dam offers a pure freefall swinging bungee from a single cord. If banging into a massive concrete structure at a top speed doesn’t scare you, then this is the jump for you. The Verzasca Dam bungee jump is the second highest bungee jump in the world.

2) Macau Tower, China – (233 m/760 feet):
The tallest, highest bungee jump in the world! 6 seconds of unadulterated freefall from the 11th tallest building in the world. It doesn’t come cheap but it grants you automatic bragging rights forever. With the ‘right’ conditions you can find yourself stretching to just 30m from the ground.

1) Volcano Bungee near Pucon, Chile (250m/820 feet):
The price isn’t exactly backpacker friendly but basically you get flown up to an active volcano in a helicopter, soaring some 10,000 feet in the air, jumpers sit perched on a helicopter’s skid and then you have to bungee jump off the helicopter into the caldera towards the molten lava. The cord stretches between 350 and 375 feet, leaving jumpers hanging just 700 feet above the volcano Pretty amazing stuff.
PRICE: A disgustingly, prohibitively expensive $9,995 for a 6 day package

The Royal Gorge Bridge, Colordo (321m/1053 feet):
Technically, it can be considered the highest bungee in the world but very few people have ever jumped from the bridge, it’s not open to the public and it’s only available every now and again. Often used to break records sporadically.

River Nevis, New Zealand (134m/440 feet)

If you’re on the backpacking trail in New Zealand, a bungee jump over the roaring River Nevis is not to be missed. From a teetering cable car, high over the Nevis River, you enter the jump pod and soak in the rugged scenery. This is the highest bungee jump spot in all of New Zealand, so all New Zealand Holidays should try to factor this beauty in. The freefall lasts for almost 9 seconds and will allow those who jump to see the full extent of this area’s beauty.

Given its location on the eastern seaboard, Kailua is famous for its windsurfing, as well as a host of other aquatic activities. For further exploring, head to nearby Lanikai Beach, another famous stretch of Hawaiian shore, and hike up to the bunkers from World War II, known as the Pillboxes. The hike is very manageable, and the views upon reaching the summit will not disappoint.

Further north along the windward coast of the island lays Kahana State Park. With its beaches tucked away behind the tree line, this area is fantastic for those hoping to stumble upon a nearly empty slice of island paradise. For those feeling adventurous, head down to Kualoa Ranch and take an ATV or horseback tour through the Ka’a'awa Valley, where you can see some of the famous sites used in the film Jurassic Park and the television show Lost, among others.

1)   Broadway, New York, US:

Probably the most famous destination to see a show anywhere in the world, with more than 40 professionals theatres featuring venues with 500 seats or over. You can grab yourself a cheap ticket on the afternoon of the show by turning up to the huge white and read TKTS booth at the end of Time Square (47^th street) where tickets run at 25%-50% discount, yes please! I was lucky enough to see the Lion King here a couple of years ago.

2)   London’s West End, UK:

No trip to London is complete without checking out a show in the west end. With around 15 million people attending shows each year, this place is hiving every day of the week. The West End is the most expensive place in the world to rent office space to tickets don’t come cheap, consider arranging one of your theatre breaks before you come to save some cash. I saw the Wizard of Oz here a few years ago, magical.

3)   Sydney Opera House, Australia:

The only UNESCO World Heritage Site to make it onto the list, the iconic opera house is a great place to watch any show. Located in Sydney harbor, the site alone is worth a visit but you haven’t really been to Sydney until you’ve sat in the Opera House and watched something. I saw a ballet show here in 2009, very cultured indeed (read: I had no idea what was going on). This is one of the landmark buildings across the globe, yet you can pick up tickets for as little as $15 depending on the event.

4)   Siam Niramit, Bangkok, Thailand:

Not anywhere near as famous as it’s 4 contemporaries but as a Bangkok resident, and with it being the inspiration for this article, I thought it deserved a place. Located in the centre of Bangkok, Siam Niramit is a state-of-the-art 2000-seat theatre, open every day, presenting one of the world’s largest stage productions. It comes complete with waterfalls and rives on stage, truly breathtaking and it runs every day. Tickets run around $30. You can purchase them online.

5)   La Scala de Milán, Italy:

Built on the former site of settlement of the church of Santa Maria alla Scala is the most famous opera house in the world, an unmissable landmark in the visit to Milan. 
It has represented many of the most famous operas of all time. Each year, the seasons start on December 7^th, try to book tickets in advance, La Scala is predictably popular.

I’m no theatre expert, far from it, but if you’re in the area of any of these five places – try to check them out. They’re part and parcel of a trip to any of the cities, and they’ll be a memory you’ll always cherish. Happy travels!

1) Grand Canyon: Not a lot to be said about the Grand Canyon that hasn’t been said before. It quite simply should feature on everyone’s bucket list. The UNESCO world heritage site is over a mile deep and will blow your mind, you can’t prepare yourself for the site – you just have to see it for yourself.

Generally speaking people take tours fro Vegas, LA and Pheonix where you can go hiking, white water rafting, bungee jumping all as part of your tour. Not cheap but pretty cool.

2) Barringer Meteor Crater: Over 50,000 years old and caused by an explosion150 times the force of the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima. The meteorite weighed approximately 300,000 tons ad although most of the meteorite vaporized on impact, large chunks of nickel-iron remnants have been found in the surrounding area so get searching when you’re here! The site is privately owned, but for $15 you’ll get to see a site like no other.

3) Monument Valley: Pretend you’re John Wayne and explore the definition of America’s wild west. The landscape has featured in hundreds of movies (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump). You can drive here when you’re in Northern Arizona, and with fees of only $5 you’d be crazy not to. Just be prepared to be caked in dust for a couple of days after!

4) Saguaro National Park: Found near Tucson in Arizona, Saguaro is everything you want from an American desert. Catus-laden back drops, crazy temperatures and awesome hiking opportunites. Wait for sunset and you’ll see the most amazing colour changes, grab a pic of a cactus silhouette and pretend you’re the best photographer in the world (don’t worry, it’s really easy).

5) Scottsdale: This Arizona town is full of galleries, restaurants and bars – it’s a pretty unknown quantity on the tourist map which is a great plus.
