Copan Ruinas is a beautiful, safe bubble within Honduras. All cobbled stone paths and winding hills, similar to Antigua in Guatemala. A few tourist bars dotted around the place and lots of wonderful little cafes to drink away your days.

There are a lot of options of places to stay, but when a town has so much personality you want to stay in a hotel that matches that, so I did just that in the Hotel Colonial there.

The hotel is a throwback to the Spanish colonial times, pastel coloured walls, winding steps and a gorgeous roof top terrace complete with 2 of the laziest hammocks you can imagine.

The rooms are huge (air-con, wifi) and the showers belt out hot water all day long (not a given in Honduras!). It’s slap, bang in the middle of the town and just a 20 minute walk from the Copan ruins.

The service isn’t great, but that’s not the end of the world when the personality of the building shines through. And, disappointingly, the breakfast was really average, I left most of it. But all is not lost, with all the cafes outside you can take a quick walk, like I did, and sit in a café for the morning munching down on as much breakfast as you can handle.

Hotel Colonial was an awesome place for me to spending my 2 nights/1 day in Copan and if they sorted out that breakfast, I’d say it’d be just about perfect. Happy travels!
