The Airplane Graveyard Bangkok

Having visited every country in the world, the one place I’ve chosen to base myself is Bangkok, Thailand. It’s hard not to love Thailand, amazing people, delicious food, great weather. gentle culture and of course Bangkok is the center of it all. Bangkok offers everything, for me it’s the greatest city in the world, and I recently discovered yet another cool, quirky way to spend an afternoon – the Airplane Graveyard, Bangkok.

2024 Edit. I built a house in Chiang Mai, Thailand now and I’m based there.

Do You Have to Pay to Enter the Airplane Graveyard in Bangkok?

Yes.

The graveyard consists of one huge double-decker plane and another four smaller planes, they’ve been abandoned in Central Bangkok for no apparent reason. Recently a small family has moved into the grounds and are living in one of the old airport hangers on the site, quite entrepreneurially they have set up a locked gate and now you need to pay them to enter their ‘home’.

They charge 300THB per person, about $9, feel free to negotiate with them but remember it’s a whole family and they need the money more than you so don’t barter too hard.

Once you’re in, you’re free to clamber all over the airplanes and explore to your heart’s content. The main attraction is the huge double-decker but it’s quite a mission to climb up to the top floor, so I’d recommend wearing sneakers, my flip-flops were quite a struggle!

The whole experience is really surreal, jumping up and down on airplane wings, sitting in the destroyed cockpit, climbing on top of the nose of one of the smaller planes. The graffiti and destruction just kinda adds to the whole experience too.

There’s nowhere quite like this in Thailand, so for sure I’d recommend spending a morning or late afternoon heading over here. You’ll probably have the place to yourself too as not many people know about it, and in  my opinion, it’s cooler than yet another temple tour. You’ll have enough of those in the rest of your time in Thailand and South East Asia!

Where is the airplane graveyard Bangkok?

It’s a little outside the city, but not too far. It’ll probably take you about an hour max from central Bangkok. It’s in the North of Bangkok, in Hua Mak/Ramkhamhaeng. The easiest way is to take a taxi and tell him ‘Ramkhamhaeng 103’, it’s about 300 from that small street, and all the local Thais around there will know what you’re looking for.

Final thoughts on the airplane graveyard Bangkok

It’s a fun, quirky activity that normally falls outside of people’s standard 3 days in Bangkok Itinerary, or if you live here and you’re on Bangkok staycation, it could be a cool addition.  If you want to experience something different, it’s worth it. There’s more to the city than just the (admittedly epic) Bangkok nightlife. Lots of people now use it as a backdrop for a photoshoot, like I did for Belstaff.

Generally, though, you’ll be the only people there. After an hour or so, normally the locals want you gone, so don’t expect to be left at peace any time after that! I hope you guys enjoy it!
