Post-MTP Chengdu 2027 group trip
Chengdu & Chongqing A five-day post-MTP mini-trip
Post-MTP trip 4
Not got another week? Go to Chongqing.
The easiest trip to bolt onto MTP Chengdu 2027. Five days, two cities, a bullet train each way, and it starts and finishes in Chengdu.
Chongqing is China’s viral Cyberpunk city, and one of the most visually insane places in the country. A giant mountain megacity of skyscrapers, rivers, bridges, cable cars and metro lines that disappear straight through buildings.
Two nights there, then back to Chengdu for pandas, Sichuan tea, old neighbourhoods and a face-changing show. Shorter and cheaper than the big post-MTP adventures, and no weird multi-ticket flights home. How nice is that?

Day by day
The Itinerary
Day 1: Chengdu to Chongqing
· Chongqing
MTP’s done, so the group hops on the one-hour bullet train to Chongqing and gets straight into it: Shancheng Alley, Jiefangbei and Chaotianmen, then Hongya Cave lit up at night. Spectacular.
The gang on my Tibet-to-Kathmandu overland trip travel from Chengdu with you, so it’s a fun first night in Chongqing with both groups together before their routes head west.
Day 2: Bonkers Chongqing
Chongqing
A full day to see just how bonkers this city is. Liziba Station, where the metro goes straight through a residential building, then the Yangtze River cableway, Xiahaoli Street and a river cruise.
Chongqing is built vertically around mountains and two enormous rivers. Half the fun is just moving through it and working out how the whole place fits together.
Day 3: Back to Chengdu
Chengdu
After breakfast the group takes the train back to Chengdu. Sichuan tea in People’s Park, a wander through Kuanzhai Alley, then Chunxi Road to see the giant 3D panda climbing over the side of a building.
A totally different pace from Chongqing, and a proper look at everyday Chengdu rather than just flying in and out for the conference.
Day 4: Pandas, Monks & Masks
Chengdu
Chengdu Panda Base first, one of the city’s biggest draws. Then Wenshu Monastery, and the day finishes with a traditional Sichuan face-changing show.
The final full sightseeing day, and a nice mix of famous, traditional and simply enjoying the city after the madness of MTP.
Day 5: Farewell, Chengdu
· Chengdu
Breakfast at the hotel, rooms until the 12pm check-out, and that’s a wrap.
Head home, stay longer in Chengdu or keep travelling independently through China. Starting and finishing in the same city makes those flights a lot simpler.
Who’s behind it
Johnny Ward
Irish guy, first Irish person to visit every country, and the first to complete the Ultimate Explorer’s Grand Slam (every country, 7 summits, both poles). I’ve taken thousands of people to some of the weirdest places on earth, and now Luis and I are giving MTP more ways to keep exploring after Chengdu.
This one is the short and sweet option: an English-speaking guide, private transport and bullet trains sorted, and a first night in Chongqing alongside my Tibet overland group.
China’s Cyberpunk city
Why this trip?
-
Hongya Cave at night
Stilted old buildings lit up gold against the skyscrapers. You won’t believe it’s real.
-
A city built upwards
Mountains, two enormous rivers, and roads, bridges and metro lines stacked on top of each other.
-
Slower Chengdu
Tea, temples and old neighbourhoods. The perfect comedown after Chongqing and the conference.

As you know, blogging changed my life. I left Ireland broke, with no plan, with just a one-way ticket to Thailand
