Finding the Perfect Balance When You Work From Home

In modern society, more and more of us are choosing to work from home. In recent years, we’ve also seen big city firms switch to remote and flexible working. At the same time, entrepreneurship and opting to go freelance are also taking off. With this in mind, understanding how to work from home is crucial. After all, it can be tough to balance work and home life when you’re always at home. So in this blog post, we’re going to explore what it takes to find the perfect balance for your lifestyle.

Understanding Your Priorities

Firstly, when it comes to being able to find a true balance between anything in life, you need to ensure that you know where your priorities are. After all, it can be quite hard to split your time and energy equally at all times. This often means that you’re not going to be able to give 50% to your personal life and 50% to your working life at all times. Instead, when you know what your priorities are, you can find a general split that works best for you.

Establishing Set Work Hours

As you get this process underway, one of the first decisions you need to make is when you’re going to work. Of course, if you’re working remotely, you may be given set working hours. But if you aren’t, you need to choose a working schedule that is going to suit you best. It doesn’t matter what hours you choose to work–they could be late or early, or even in two slots throughout the day. But having that set schedule will allow you to focus purely on work during that window, then focus on home and personal things outside of it.

Having a Schedule for House Chores

It’s also vital that you have a schedule for when you want to get things done around the house. Otherwise, you may find that you just spot things as you’re moving around throughout the day, and start jumping between tasks! The best way to do this is to make sure that you have all the equipment you need to hand. Sure, it can be easy to have a stocked cleaning cabinet for inside, but what about the garden? When you have a lawn mower and leaf mulcher ready to go, you can make sure that your garden is looking clean and tidy in no time at all too. That way, when the work is quick and you have a set schedule for the chores, you can then focus entirely on your work, knowing that everything is done.

Making Your Office Space Feel Inviting

If you want to ensure that you focus when you work, your office space needs to facilitate that. Plus, this is now entirely your own domain, so you can design it as you see fit. Have fun bringing in a desk and chair that will now become your new HQ. If your workspace feels inviting, you’ll have a much better chance at staying productive during that working window.

Investing in Everything You Need

To help with productivity, you’ll want to make sure that you have everything you need to do your job well. Of course, this means a laptop or computer and the physical technology components you need–like strong WiFi. But you can also turn to the best pieces of software that will allow you to stay organised. Ultimately, you need to make sure that you know where you are with everything so that you can establish that perfect balance!

Enjoying Your Career

When it comes to getting the balance right on the career side of things, you need to ensure that you’re going all in. Just because you’ve decided to become a freelancer or opt for flexible working, it doesn’t mean that your career ambitions change. It also doesn’t make you less serious or dedicated. In fact, this is now the time when you need to focus on career fulfillment, setting and reaching goals, and really enjoying what you’re building. After all, you likely made this decision to improve your quality of life. So, it’s important to ensure that happens.

Switching Off After Work

Although you’re working at home, you’re still working. It doesn’t mean that you get that same relaxed feeling as you usually would when being at home. This means you need to actively pursue the idea of switching off. With your home now also being your work space, it may trick your mind and body into constantly being in work mode. Combat this by ensuring that you have tools and go-tos that allow you to switch off after work.

Separating Home and Work in Your Interiors

Another thing that can help the idea of detaching from your home, now being your place of work, is physically keeping the two separate. While it might seem convenient (and even a little fun!) to work at the dining table or kick back on the sofa, this may just blur boundaries even further. Having a set working space that you can shut the door on at the end of the day is going to help you keep the two modes separate. Having that set office space will also ensure that you’re a lot more productive.

Getting Out of the House More

One thing you really need to make sure that you do is get out of the house more. Working from home can offer a lot of freedom and flexibility, but it also keeps you still. It’s important to get out of the house as often as you can. Not only do you need the daily vitamin D for your health, but it can be beneficial to ensure that you’re shaking up your environment regularly to avoid cabin fever.

Enjoying Your Balance for What it Is

Finally, you also need to make sure that you’re happy with the kind of balance that you’re building for yourself. Remember, this doesn’t have to be an equal split between both. Sometimes, you will have weeks where one area of your life takes up more time, and then it will shift. But that’s okay! It’s all about you taking the pressure off and being able to enjoy the balance for what it really is.
