Top European Cities for Traveling with Your Dog

There’s so much to see in European cities, ranging from historic city centers to amazing architecture, countless cafes, and sprawling city parks. The trip is even more enjoyable with your pup by your side.

Research shows that traveling with dogs offers mental and physical benefits, enhances enjoyment, and improves the dogs’ well-being and happiness. Exploring Europe with your dog can turn a good trip into a great one, especially if you plan and head where dogs are genuinely welcome.

Berlin, Germany

It may not shout “dog haven” at first glance, but Berlin is a great place to travel with your dog. Parks are everywhere. For example, Tempelhofer Feld, an abandoned airport, was transformed into a massive open space for running.

You’ll see dogs off-leash, snoozing under cafe tables, even riding the U-Bahn like seasoned commuters. Dog-friendly hotels and cafes aren’t hard to find either.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

In Amsterdam, dogs are part of the action, whether it’s canal strolls, brunches, or boat rides. Small dogs are usually allowed to ride for free on most public transportation, such as trams and buses.

You may need a discounted ticket if you have a bigger one, and with bins everywhere, there’s no excuse not to clean after your pup. Most areas also require them to be leashed.

Paris, France

Parisians are surprisingly relaxed when it comes to dogs. You can spot little ones in handbags, but big breeds are welcome, too. It’s common to see dogs quietly sitting beside their humans at cafes or walking through the Marais.

Some parks are a bit stricter (like the Tuileries), but others, such as Bois de Vincennes or Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, are perfect for a game of fetch or a lazy afternoon walk.

Vienna, Austria

Vienna’s charm lies in its mix of old-world grace and modern convenience. That balance extends to its dog policies, and they can be very pet-friendly.

Dogs are allowed on public transport with a muzzle and leash, and there are “hundezonen” (dog zones) in parks where they can roam free. Cafes and restaurants are hit or miss, but if you ask politely, many will let your dog join you.

Helpful Tips Before Traveling:

Get A Passport and Certs for Your Pet

Ensure you check the rules for traveling with your dog before you pack your bags. In most EU countries, your dog may be required to have a rabies vaccine, a microchip, and official paperwork.

Transport Rules

These can vary depending on your location. Some cities require dogs to wear muzzles, while others don’t. Look it up before hopping on a train.

Local Etiquette Matters

Letting your dog run wild and loose may raise eyebrows in some countries. The best thing to do is to watch what locals do and follow their lead.

Get an eSIM Europe

With an eSIM for Europe, you can stay connected on your phone without swap cards or pay roaming fees. It makes travel planning on the go way less stressful.

Wrap Up

Traveling through Europe with your dog doesn’t have to be complicated. With a bit of planning, a leash, and some common sense, you’ll find loads of places where your dog isn’t just tolerated, but genuinely welcome.
