Driving With Kids? 4 Types of Emergencies You Need to Learn How to Handle
Every parent knows that when it comes to driving around with kids, anything could happen. It’s never a dull moment. But it’s nearly impossible for parents to know what to expect. Yet, preparation is crucial.
If you’re planning a long drive or road trip with your children, here are some potential emergencies you should plan for, just to be on the safe side:

Flat Tire
Dealing with a flat tire? This can surely be disappointing and can cause delays to your destination. Nonetheless, it necessitates strategic intervention, especially when you have kiddos in the car.
If your tire pressure is simply low, drive slowly and carefully to the nearest gas station to fill your tire before heading back on the road.
If you have a full-blown flat tire, don’t continue driving. Safely pull over on the side of the road, if possible, and turn on your hazards. If you have a spare tire on hand, keep your car running with the AC or heater to keep the kids in adequate temperature, lock your doors, and change out the affected tire.
No spare? You’ll need to call a family member or friend to bring you a spare or help you switch out the bad tire. A towing company can also tow your vehicle to the nearest auto shop for a tire replacement.
Severe Weather
While weather can sometimes be predicted, other times, weather conditions can come as a surprise. There have also been plenty of times in history where a storm came quicker or was more severe than anticipated.
If severe weather strikes when driving with children, first off, keep your kiddos calm and turn down your radio. If safe to do so, carefully pull over until road and visibility conditions improve.
For more severe types of weather like a hurricane, seek a safe shelter to temporarily stay in that’s away from power lines and large trees. Always listen to your gut feeling in these extreme conditions, prioritize your children’s safety, and call emergency services if the situation becomes life threatening.
Traffic Jams
While a traffic jam isn’t per say an on-the-road emergency, it can become one. Traffic congestion can increase the odds of a vehicular collision. It can also significantly delay your commute time, which may trigger tantrums in children, creating an all-around stressful situation.
If you believe traffic is going to be heavy, consider bringing snacks before taking off. You’ll also want to stock up on entertainment and fun playlists to keep your children distracted during chaotic traffic.
Car Accident
Forbid it ever happens to you, especially when your children are in the vehicle, but preparing for a potential car accident is important.
Car accident safety starts by ensuring your kiddos are adequately buckled into their seats or car seats before heading anywhere. Having a first aid kit on hand is also recommended. Additionally, ensuring you have a safe, family-friendly vehicle like an Axio car is crucial.
Now onto what to do if you do end up in a vehicular collision. Whether it be a fender bender or more severe accident, always check to make sure your kids are safe and help keep them calm. Even if everything seems fine, call 911, and speak with the other driver regarding insurance and contact information.
Once authorities arrive, they will document the scene and make sure everyone involved, including your children, are okay.
Conclusion
Preparing for a long drive with the kids requires a good plan and a lot of patience. Knowing what to do in the case of an emergency is a great place to start. Having a strategy established can give you a backup plan if and when things do go wrong on the road, keeping your kids safe in the process.
