How to Return to Balanced Routines After Relaxing Vacations?

Vacations are for breaking all the rules, be it productivity goals, schedules, diets, or sleeping habits. We all crave letting loose and forgetting about our usual troubles. However, after such an unrestrictive adventure, returning to normal and regaining control over your habits can be difficult.

The struggles can be at home, managing your eating habits, or returning to personal projects that seem tedious compared to the carefree living you experienced during vacation. The last blow can be stepping back into the office and getting flooded with catch-up meetings or new Slack messages. In this article, we suggest some clever ways to ease your transition from vacation mode to a more regular lifestyle.

Start small to feel a sense of accomplishment

You can’t revert to your regular schedule and routine in a day. The first week will likely feel sluggish, and the pile of work that needs your attention will look big and scary.

  • Try dividing your tasks into smaller ones. For example, unpacking your luggage and doing laundry can be irritating, but you will surely feel better after putting away your suitcase.
  • Return to your regular tasks one step at a time. For instance, if you’re into side hustles, consider the best approach for regaining control over them. In this case, starting with the easiest option also works. That could mean enabling apps to sell internet data and earn, which doesn’t require any effort. Services like Honeygain do all the work for you, but you still feel a sense of accomplishment, which will likely motivate you to do more.
  • Before any vacation, spend some time cleaning your home. Then, as soon as you step back into your space, you won’t feel overwhelmed by the mess that you still need to take care of.

Prioritize what needs your attention the most

Instead of doing everything at once and, likely, failing, decide which tasks are essential. For example, grocery shopping for some healthier food could be on top of your priority list. In other cases, it might relate to checking on your additional projects and ensuring they are running smoothly.

For best results, plan a flexible schedule of tasks that you want to achieve during the first week. Various daily planner apps, such as Motion or Todoist, can help with this planning.

If you’re feeling particularly sluggish, try to get some physical activity, such as taking a walk or going to the gym.

Finding the motivation after vacation

After so much anticipation, the vacation has passed: now what? This question lingers in every traveler’s mind. The key here is to discover ways to increase your enthusiasm in your home environment. For many people, returning to their pets can be incredibly motivational. Others might need to fill their time with meetings with their loved ones or general outings. Anything to regain that spark!

Give yourself time at work

If your work colleagues flood you with messages and demands, be clear about your intention to catch up on everything before becoming a fully functional employee. Of course, some might not have this luxury, and it is essential to return to normal as soon as possible. Yet, look for flexibility whenever possible, asking your colleagues whether deadlines can be adjusted to give you more time to gather insights into everything that happened while you were gone.

If returning to routines is particularly difficult

Some people are much more sensitive to changes in their routine. In these cases, it might be better to retain some of them during your vacation. That might include briefly working on your side hustles or following a healthier lifestyle. Having your vacation lifestyle resemble your usual routine at least a little gives people more control and helps them return to their everyday habits more easily.

Post-vacation blues are hard

Vacations are blissful, but the period after returning to them certainly is not. Don’t feel discouraged if your routine stays a bit unbalanced for a few weeks. After all, it takes time to regain your strength and motivation for regular things after enjoying new adventures!
