Balancing a love of traveling and exploring new destinations, and managing a tight budget can be challenging. There are several ways to save money and make those dream trips a reality without breaking the bank. In the upcoming discussion, we’ll explore different strategies such as cutting down expenses, finding creative sources of income, and exploiting travel deals.

Budget-Friendly Travel Hacks

● Get a Side Hustle

Rather than lock yourself into a rigid, full-time job that offers very little freedom to travel, consider having multiple streams of income. Juggle some flexible side hustles that allow for extended time away, such as restaurant work, pet sitting, or housekeeping.

● Save Your Change

Get into the habit of saving up your spare change and leveraging cashback rewards. Every time you empty your pockets or purse, stack up your spare change and let it build up over time. Likewise, if you’re accustomed to using a debit card to make purchases, use an app that rounds up your purchases and invests your spare change over time.

● Play, Don’t Plan

Have fun with the process of researching your next travel destination, enjoy saving money to fund your flight and all the steps along the way. Be safe, and be aware, look up the common ways travelers may be scammed in the place where you’re going so that you’re not seen as a potential target. Scams do happen, but they don’t have to happen to you.

● Travel Off Season

If the resort life is more your style, be sure to stack up traveling rewards and check the calendars regularly for price changes. The savings for traveling during the off-season is surprising.

● Travel Light

Some airlines charge for checking baggage, so carry only the absolute essentials when traveling. Thrift stores exist pretty much everywhere, buy what you need for a fun day or two, and donate those garments back after washing them.

● Find the right flight

Do not use a travel agency! Look at things like Google Flights and other price comparison apps to book an itinerary within your budget. Use more than one app, because not all apps are built the same and some offer lower prices if you’re willing to suffer a longer layover.

● Choose a humble abode

Whenever possible, stay with friends and family, and always be a tidy and appreciative guest. If you’re a brave and adventurous sort, consider the inexpensive option of staying at a hostel. Be prepared to share a room with a stranger when staying in a hostel, if you find you’re not able to secure a private room.

● Skip the car rental

Study the map of your destination ahead of time, book a room within easy walking distance of your must-see places, and consider the inexpensive options of public transportation.

● Get Remote Work

Short term jobs can be found anywhere, but it’s also a good idea to have one of your sources income be remote work that you can accomplish anywhere you can find a wifi connection.

● Pick Up Local Work

Depending on the length of your travel, you might want to consider picking up a seasonal job. Of course, it’s always smart to have at least one side hustle that allows you to work remotely all year long.

● Arrive First, Then Play

Rather than booking a tour, or activity, through an agency weeks before your arrival, wait until you’ve had time to check into your room before planning your itinerary. Talk to locals who live in the area and see if there are less-expensive ways to enjoy the sights.

● Make Your Own Sandwich

Always do your due diligence in researching your intended destination long before your arrival. Study up on the customs, weather, public transportation, and cost of living. The price of a sandwich, for example, is dramatically different depending on where in the world you’re traveling.

When traveling on a tight budget somewhere with a high cost of living, for example, it makes more sense to purchase food from a grocery store and prepare meals for yourself rather than dine out at a restaurant with inflated prices.

Think Outside the Cubicle

Instead of trying to squeeze all of your adventures into your only two weeks worth of paid time off try building a life around traveling. Even better if you can get someone to pay you to travel to them.

You could refinance your home and use the money to finance a fantastic voyage. While you’re comparing mortgage rates on Sofi, consider renting out a spare room in your home to travelers as a way of padding your adventure budget. Be flexible with your attitude towards financial resources, you may have untapped flows of income you never considered before.

Break free of the cubicle box, trade in that desktop for a tablet, and start chasing your dreams around the world, one exotic destination at a time. You might be thinking that traveling is a luxury and there’s just no room for it in your tight budget. The truth is, with the right mindset and strategies, it’s possible to make your dreams of exploring new places a reality without breaking the bank.
