How the Global Star Spot Gen 4 Made the Eye of the Sahara Ultramarathon Possible
When I first envisioned the Eye of the Sahara Ultramarathon, I knew it would be a challenge like no other. Running 160km across the deep desert—from the breathtaking Eye of the Sahara to the ancient city of Chinguetti—was uncharted territory. No one had ever attempted it before, and I wanted to ensure that it was not just an extreme endurance event, but a safe one too. That’s where Tycom and their Global Star Spot Gen 4 tracking technology came in.

The Birth of a Unique Challenge
The Eye of the Sahara Ultramarathon was born from my obsession with pushing boundaries. After years of traveling, adventuring, and competing in extreme endurance challenges, I wanted to create something truly unique.
Eight brave souls took on the challenge, and six of them managed to finish. It was brutally tough—searing heat, endless dunes, and no clear paths. The risk of getting lost was very real. Unlike marathons with defined courses, this ultramarathon crossed unmarked desert terrain, where visibility is low, and landmarks are scarce. I needed a way to ensure no one would go missing, and that’s where the Global Star Spot Gen 4 became an essential part of the event’s success.

The Role of the Global Star Spot Gen 4 GPS
Tycom stepped in as a sponsor, providing us with Global Star Spot Gen 4 devices for every runner. Without them, the race simply wouldn’t have been feasible. These GPS trackers allowed us to monitor every participant in real-time, ensuring their safety while also providing them with a sense of security in an environment where getting lost could mean life or death.

Here’s why this device was a game-changer:
1. Live Tracking in the Deep Desert
The biggest challenge of running an ultramarathon in the Sahara is the remoteness. There’s no infrastructure, no road signs—just endless dunes and rock formations. The Global Star Spot Gen 4 provided real-time tracking, allowing us to monitor runners’ locations, ensuring they stayed on course and didn’t veer too far off the designated route.
2. Emergency SOS Button
Out here, if something goes wrong, it goes really wrong. If a runner became dehydrated, suffered an injury, or got lost, they could press the emergency SOS button, instantly alerting us. This feature alone gave both the runners and the support crew peace of mind, knowing that help was just a button press away.
3. Starlink Connectivity for Reliable Communication
One of the biggest challenges of operating in the Sahara is the lack of traditional phone or internet networks. That’s where Starlink came in. With its satellite-based internet, we were able to connect to the Global Star Spot Gen 4 system, track runners in real-time, and receive alerts immediately in case of an emergency. Without this setup, monitoring runners would have been nearly impossible.
4. Durability and Battery Life
A device in the desert needs to be tough. The Sahara is an unforgiving place, with extreme temperatures and constant dust. The Global Star Spot Gen 4 handled it all. Plus, its impressive battery life meant it lasted the entire event without needing frequent recharges—crucial for a multi-day ultramarathon in a place where power sources are nonexistent.

The Future of the Eye of the Sahara Ultramarathon
With the first edition of the Eye of the Sahara Ultramarathon successfully completed, we’re already gearing up for next year’s race. We’ll once again rely on Tycom and the Global Star Spot Gen 4 to make it happen. The Sahara is an incredible, humbling place, but it’s also one of the most dangerous environments on Earth. Without proper navigation and emergency support, an event like this simply couldn’t happen.
Thanks to the cutting-edge technology provided by Tycom, we were able to create an event that was not just extreme but also safe. The runners could push their limits knowing they were being tracked every step of the way. For anyone planning an adventure in remote areas—whether it’s an ultramarathon, a solo expedition, or even a long-distance trek—investing in a reliable GPS tracker like the Global Star Spot Gen 4 is an absolute must.

Final Thoughts
Running 160km through the Sahara is no joke. It takes grit, endurance, and a whole lot of preparation. But beyond physical fitness and mental toughness, it also requires the right technology. The Global Star Spot Gen 4 wasn’t just a useful tool; it was a lifeline. Without it, we wouldn’t have been able to host the first-ever ultramarathon from the Eye of the Sahara to Chinguetti.
If you’re looking for a GPS tracker that can handle extreme conditions and provide real-time tracking, emergency support, and reliability when it matters most, I can’t recommend the Global Star Spot Gen 4 enough. Tycom has truly created a product that makes exploration safer and more accessible, and I’ll be trusting them again for next year’s race.
See you in the Sahara next year—hopefully with even more runners daring to take on the challenge!
