8 Items To Improve Your Travel Experience

There aren’t many things more exciting than going on a trip. It can be a much-needed break from life’s stresses, or you might be a digital nomad or remote worker constantly on the road. Either way, getting out of your comfort zone and exploring the world is one of the most fulfilling things you can do.

Although it’s nice to travel light, the right gadgets and apps can help you stay productive and enjoy your trip more. The right equipment improves any trip, from chargers and memory sticks to an iOS VPN to protect your iPhone on public networks. Here are some items well worth picking up for your next adventure:

Portable Travel Safe

A portable travel safe is a great way to keep your valuables safe while traveling. After all, you don’t always have access to a hotel safe, and a portable safe can make it harder for thieves to access your possessions.

Small enough to slip into your bag, a travel safe holds your phone, watch, credit cards, or other valuables. Use the attached steel cable to lock it on to an immovable object so no one walks off with it.

Hotel Door Lock

Another great way to stay safe while traveling is by bringing a hotel door lock with you.

Yes, most hotel rooms already have locking doors, but you don’t know who might have access to the key. A portable door lock like this one can help give you additional peace of mind when sleeping somewhere new. Some locks also come with alarms to provide even more security when you travel.

VPN App

It’s not just your physical safety you need to think about. Public Wi‑Fi at airports and cafés is a prime target for hackers. Before you go, install a VPN app on your devices (for iPhone, use an iOS VPN) to encrypt your connection on hotel, airport, and café networks. It can also help you access services that are restricted by location while you’re abroad.

Folding Bluetooth Keyboard

If you need to work while you’re away, a folding Bluetooth keyboard can be an absolute lifesaver. These keyboards fold down small enough to fit into your pocket, but when expanded, they give you a big keyboard that can help you type more efficiently and with fewer mistakes.

Instead of pecking away on your phone’s keyboard, you can write full reports and emails from just about anywhere. Maybe you could even leave your laptop at home and use your phone as your main computer while you travel.

Universal Travel Adapter (with Multi‑Port Charger)

Probably the biggest weakness of travel gadgets is the need to charge them. Staying powered up is essential on the road, and outlets vary by country. Bring a universal travel adapter so you can plug in worldwide (commonly US/EU/UK/AU). Choose one with a built-in multi‑port wall charger—ideally USB‑C (PD) plus USB‑A—so you can power a laptop and charge your phone and other gadgets at the same time. Features like surge protection and a replaceable fuse are useful extras.

Vacuum Bags

Traveling light is great if you can pull it off, but some of us like to bring clothing options. These days, additional baggage charges can quickly add up. Avoid them by using vacuum bags to store your luggage.

Pack these bags with clothes and pump out the air to shrink them down. Many come with a manual or electric pump so you can shrink your bags on your way back, too.

USB Drive or Portable SSD

It’s easy to take thousands of photos and videos on a trip somewhere new. If you’re not careful, your phone can quickly fill up. Bring a compact USB drive or portable SSD to move photos and videos into storage, freeing up space on your phone. These drives add almost nothing to your luggage weight while giving you tons of room for your pictures.

Bluetooth Tracker

It’s an unfortunate fact of life that sometimes, bags go missing. A Bluetooth tracker can help you locate your luggage and other items, which is invaluable if they’re lost. Attach one to your bag so you can track it and recover it quickly.
