The Best Beaches in Zadar and Around
Table of contents
Not only is the Croatian town of Zadar currently home to more than 70,000 residents, but it is also the oldest continuously occupied metropolitan area in Croatia. Known for attractions such as its Old Town, the Church of Saint Donatus, and a massive archaeological museum, Zadar is undoubtedly one of the most popular tourist attractions along the Adriatic coastline.
It is therefore entirely reasonable to see why tourists also flock here to soak up a bit of fun in the sun. Surf and sand have come to define the entire region, and it pays to take a closer look at some stunning beaches to visit during your stay.
Zaton
This first recommendation is perfectly suited for those who will be visiting Zadar with young children. Found only 10 miles from the town centre, Zaton Beach is essentially a small cove that offers protected waters, and spectacular inland views that punctuate its shores. There are also plenty of nearby amenities such as restaurants and tourist-friendly hotels. However, the popularity of Zaton beach also makes it one of the most crowded destinations within this list.
Saharun Beach
Might you instead be looking to get away from it all? If so, there is perhaps no better option that Saharun Beach. This large lagoon boasts a second-to-none level of natural beauty, and its white sands serve to perfectly punctuate the aquamarine glow of nearby waters. Note that the best way to access Saharun Beach is via maritime routes. This is why many instead choose to rent a boat in Zadar upon arrival. There are numerous vessels to select, and this experience will add a touch of luxury to any excursion.
Petrčane
Petrčane beach provides a unique glimpse into the maritime history of Zadar, and indeed, the entire Dalmatian coast. It is not uncommon to see fishing vessels out at sea; still plying a trade that can be traced back for thousands of years. The good news is that this section of beach is relatively unknown to the majority of tourists. As Petrčane is only found a few miles north of Zadar, arriving here should not be a problem.
Borik
Why not instead participate in a handful of physical activities during your stay? If you enjoy options such as water skiing and windsurfing, you are in luck. Local businesses offer these options on a daily basis, and it is even possible to take a lazy excursion atop a large banana-shaped inflatable raft. The waters here are shallow, and the currents are generally weak. This makes Borik yet another alternative to keep in mind when travelling with the family.
There are actually dozens of beaches found within close proximity to Zadar, so do not hesitate to expand your research with the help of online travel guides. The options mentioned above are nonetheless certain to provide you with memories that will last far beyond the journey itself.
