The Best Thailand SIM Card: AIS is better than an eSim

This sounds like it’s sponsored by AIS. But it’s not I promise! So, to be fast and easy, when you’re looking for the best Thailand SIM card, get AIS. Not DTAC (another local company) and not an eSIM. Simple as that. Read on to find out why, but please know that I’ve lived in Thailand for more than a decade and this is the best way. Why? The longer answer is below, but the short answer? IT’S SUPER CHEAP FOR TRUE, GENUINE, UNLIMITED SUPER FAST 5G.

Here’s why you should make AIS your go-to choice when you touch down in the Land of Smiles.

Unlimited Data: Why It’s a Game-Changer

This is the real reason. And why the best Thailand SIM card is the AIS one. You can get a banging UNLIMITED package when you get their sim.

One of the standout features of the AIS SIM card is the option for unlimited data. For travelers who love streaming, social media, or need to work remotely, this is an absolute game-changer.

1. UNLIMITED DATA: With AIS’s unlimited data plans, you can stream your favorite shows, upload photos to Instagram, or video call your loved ones back home without worrying about running out of data.

2. No Throttling: Unlike some competitors, AIS doesn’t throttle your speeds after a certain data usage threshold. This means you can enjoy consistently fast internet throughout your stay, whether you’re binge-watching Netflix in your hotel or navigating with Google Maps on the go.

3. Cost-Effective: While unlimited data plans might sound expensive, AIS offers these plans at a surprisingly affordable rate. Given the peace of mind and convenience they provide, these plans are a smart investment for any traveler wanting to stay connected without constraints.

Why AIS is the Best Choice: A Comparison with Competitors

There are 3 big players in thailand – AIS, DTAC, and TrueMove. They’re all good. Better than what we have in Europe, but AIS consistently outshines the competition for a few key reasons.

1. Network Coverage: AIS has the most extensive network coverage in Thailand, although they’re all good.

2. Speed and Reliability: AIS not only offers broad coverage but also delivers consistently fast and reliable 4G and 5G speeds. This is particularly crucial if you’re a digital nomad or someone who needs to work on the go. While TrueMove H and DTAC offer competitive speeds, AIS tends to be more consistent, especially in busy areas where network congestion can slow down your connection. Again, they’re all good though.

3. Customer Service: The AIS stores in the malls are super helpful.

Ultimately though, it’s all about that super cheap UNLIMITED data option, that’s why to go with AIS.

Why AIS is Better Than an eSIM

eSims are great. I use them in almost every country. But I know Thailand inside out, so this is the one country that a real Sim is better. And it’s because of the unlimited Data.

1. Instant Activation: With an AIS SIM card, you can pop it into your phone upon arrival, and you’re instantly connected. No need to fiddle with QR codes or worry about eSIM compatibility issues, which can be a hassle, especially after a long flight.

2. Flexibility: AIS SIM cards are widely available and can be easily swapped out or upgraded. If you run out of data or decide to extend your stay, you can simply top up or switch to a different plan without any technical headaches. eSIMs, while convenient, can be less flexible when it comes to making changes on the fly.

3. Coverage and Speed: While eSIMs can offer decent coverage, they often rely on roaming agreements with local networks. This can lead to slower speeds and less reliable connections compared to having a direct link to AIS’s network. With an AIS SIM card, you’re directly plugged into Thailand’s best network, ensuring you get the fastest speeds and most reliable connection.

Where to Buy AIS SIM Cards: Conveniently Available at Every Airport

Every airport has it. Pick one up here. Buy whatever the cheapest $5 or less package they sell you and then download the app and get the unlimited data for yourself.

1. Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang Airports): As soon as you land, you’ll see AIS booths in the arrival halls. These are open 24/7, making it easy to grab a SIM card no matter what time your flight arrives. The staff is usually multilingual and can help set up your SIM card in minutes.

2. Phuket International Airport: Upon arrival in Phuket, you’ll find AIS booths conveniently located in the arrivals area. Whether you’re heading straight to the beach or your hotel, you can get connected as soon as you touch down.

3. Chiang Mai International Airport: For those exploring the northern part of Thailand, AIS SIM cards are readily available at Chiang Mai International Airport. The process is quick, so you can start exploring the old city without delay.

4. Other Major Airports: AIS SIM cards are also available at other international airports in Thailand, including Krabi and Samui. Wherever you land, you’ll find AIS ready to get you connected.

Conclusion: The Best SIM card for Thailand
