The 5 most interesting cities to visit in Asia

Hong Kong, China

Hong Kong resembles Istanbul in its contrasts. Europe and Asia coexist in this city, and just around the corner from an inconspicuous Chinese shop, travelers may find an English pub.

Of course, there is a reason why there are English pubs in Hong Kong: it was a British colony for a long time. Now, in Hong Kong, as in any metropolis, you can watch a Hollywood movie, drink European beer, and grab a bite to eat at McDonald’s.

In addition to fast food, Hong Kong offers a wide variety of cuisines from around the world, including Asian and European.

Bangkok, Thailand

Many travelers stop in the capital, Bangkok, before heading to the islands of Thailand.

There is plenty to do in one of the most interesting cities in Asia. For example, you can stay in one of the luxury hotels with panoramic views of the skyscrapers, and then, in search of adventure, take a local taxi-scooter to the slums of Bangkok, try cheap street food, and see how ordinary Thais live.

Bangkok is a city of contrasts, where the distance from the Royal Palace or majestic Buddhist temples to plywood shacks is only a few hundred meters.

Singapore, Singapore

Singapore is a city-state located on 63 islands in Southeast Asia. Many consider it the city of the future thanks to the social responsibility of its residents and advanced technologies. But Singapore was not always so — perfectly clean, economically developed, and prosperous. In the mid-20th century, only drug trafficking and corruption flourished here. With independence and the rise to power of Lee Kuan Yew, the future prime minister, Singapore set a course for a bright future.

It is distinguished by its unique culture, developed economy, and abundance of entertainment programs for travelers. Some will enjoy walking in the Botanical Gardens or Singapore Zoo, others will enjoy the rides at Merlion Park and Universal Studios, and others will enjoy wandering through the shops in Little India or Chinatown.

Some hotels in Singapore are also considered attractions, such as the famous Marina Bay Sands hotel, which resembles a ship. The famous rooftop pool is also located here.

Macau, China

Macau is similar to Hong Kong for two reasons: first, it is a special independent region of China with its own legal, monetary, and immigration systems. Second, Macau is a mix of Portuguese and Chinese cultures due to the fact that the territory was a Portuguese colony for several centuries. In modern Macau, you can see Portuguese churches and forts next to Chinese temples. Macau is the only city in China where gambling is allowed, which is why it is called the “Las Vegas of Asia.”

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia, located on the large Malacca Peninsula in Southeast Asia. The city is distinguished by its mix of architectural styles: here you can see Islamic mosques, cathedrals, and modern skyscrapers in the modernist and postmodernist styles. Kuala Lumpur features examples of Gothic, Victorian, Neo-Moorish, Tudor, and Malay architecture.

But it is not only its diverse architecture that makes Kuala Lumpur an interesting city for tourists. It is also the greenest capital in Asia thanks to Malaysia’s unique natural environment. For example, it is here that you can find the so-called “walking trees,” whose roots grow from the middle of the trunk and move towards the water.
