Thai islands are fun, Rome is beautiful and steeped in history, Copacabana beach is great but it’s all so well trodden. It smells of been there, done that. Don’t get me wrong, I love those places but sometimes we feel the need to go a little further, and I’m hoping some of you guys might wanna join me on this adventure….
On November 28th this year (2014) I’m venturing to my final continent, Antarctica. It’s an 11 day trip, ending back in Argentina on the 8th December.
The company that I’ve chosen to go with are Chimu Adventures, they organize trips across the whole of Central and South America but they’re real Antarctica specialists. I’ve spent the last 2 months checking out all the operators running expeditions to Antarctica and finally I’ve found the right guys.
The tour I’ve chosen is the Classic Antarctica, an 11 day trip leaving from Ushuaia, Argentina and passing through the Drake Passage to the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland islands.
It was a tough choice which expedition to choose based on how long/how much/activities you can do etc. But I’m 100% sure I’ve chosen the right one.
I wanted to make sure I get to actually step foot on the continent, and of course you can do that here, but also you can do a few additional activities too. You can kayak through the polar waters, around icebergs and get up close with the wildlife AND you can camp on the ice overnight. Unreal!
PRICE
Antarctica is expensive, that’s the cold, hard truth. But, in my opinion, you can’t put a price on an experience like this. As I mentioned, I searched long and hard for a ‘cheap’ price but an awesome trip. Initially all I could find were trips for $8k+ all the way to $15k and I was pretty disheartened. But luckily I stumbled across these guys, my trip starts at $4, 999 and a couple of hundred dollars extra for the kayaking and camping (definitely doing that!). Not cheap I know, but it’s Antarctica!! The money is an afterthought.
SHIP
The ship is the MS Expedition. I guess I’ll be spending a fair amount of my time there, but there’s a library, gym, sauna and a fully stocked bar so it might be quite a fun time! All food is included too. Right now I’m going solo, there’ll be around 120 people on the ship but I’m hoping some of you guys might jump on the bandwagon with me?
It’s tough to find people to do something this crazy, expensive and exciting, but I know a lot of my readers are travel junkies, so if you’ve ever dreamt of a trip like this but none of your friends/family would ever take the plunge – take the plunge with me!
The email I used to contact the guys was info@chimuadventure so feel free to drop them a line, or even better send me a message to johnny@onestep4ward.com or on my fanpage, facebook.com/onestep4ward and let me know you wanna come with me! I’m so excited, I feel like a kid again. For the first time in a long time, I’m filled with that true excitement like traveling for the first time. Roll of November and see you there! Happy travels.
ADDED* Note guys: I just spoke to the company – the deposit is $1500 USD, with the balance due 3 months prior to departure. They accept payments with Euro, AUD, USD and GBP. I’m all done, now let’s do it!? And the CEO “would stress that cabins at the lower price are quite limited”!
