Cancun can be anything you make it. I’m not entirely sure whether they love or loathe their international reputation as a cheap American getaway but for sure it certainly created reservations for me to go there. Screen Shot 2014-05-12 at 4.13.04 PM However, I’ve been around this block before. Too many places with certain reputations have been crossed of the list, only for me to finally venture to them and be very pleasantly surprised (Sihanoukville, Cambodia for example). So Cancun became one such place. Obviously the nightlife and beaches are the main draw for tourists, whereas Chichen Itza is probably the biggest draw for travellers, but there is a whole lot else to do in Cancun too though. DSC_1498 (Copiar) AQUATWISTER (24) (Copiar) (Copy) I was staying in the old town as opposed to ‘the strip’ (great decision by the way!), I had 3 days to explore. One was a great day trip to Chichen Itza, but day 2 was up in the air. What to do that doesn’t involve joining the rowdy Americans chugging beer from 9.30am? I stumbled across a really cool company called Aqua World and their underwater ‘museum’.

Wow, this looked epic! So I booked to check it out the next day.   The next day though there was a pretty choppy storm so the under water museum was postponed, but I had already committed to spending some time with these guys so I had to choose a few of their other activities to keep me excited and occupied.   Turns out these guys do EVERYTHING in Cancun! Fishing, whale sharks, dolphins, jet skis the lot. I choose to do 2 things – 1) The Skyrider and 2) The Aqua Twister   1)   The Skyrider With the skyrider you jump on one of Aquaworld’s speed boats and head out into the ocean for 10 minutes or so where you jump boats onto a larger vessel equipped with a huge parachute. Before you know it you’re sitting in the ‘throne’ attached to the thing and you’re off. The speed of the boat has you straight up in the air in seconds. IMG_5006 IMG_5008 Parasailing in Cancun is an awesome way to see the whole layout. The view from the parachute seat is something really special. You don’t feel scared at all, it’s more just a peaceful calm as you talk in your surroundings. I got struck with one of those solo travel moments as I was up there, thinking ‘wow, here I am in Mexico living my life just the way I wanna be’. I love those moments of clarity, and it’s huge vistas or vantage points that often bring them on. Anyway, safe to say I loved it, that is until the pilot of the speedboat decided to dunk me in the ocean for fun on the way down! Well played sir, well played! Screen Shot 2014-05-12 at 4.14.53 PM Screen Shot 2014-05-12 at 4.14.38 PM 2)   The Aqua Twister This beast is Aqua World’s claim to fame. It’s a stunt/speed boat with huge speakers blasting out club music, where you get strapped in for a 30 minute ride, get flung around the ocean and have the sea water sprayed all over you. It feels like you’re about to capsize at any moment, and with speeds approaching 60 mph on this little boat, you’re really moving! The sound system is awesome, and every pleasure cruiser eyes in the vicinity are drawn to the boat as we were doing 360 spins in the water. It’s frenetic, fast paced and pretty bloody cool! IMG_5012 Screen Shot 2014-05-12 at 4.13.04 PM So Aqua World gave me an awesome day. I’m still gutted for the underwater museum though, snorkeling there would have been epic. But as I continue on my trip to every country in the world, is kinda nice to have reasons to go back places. So pencil me in Aquaworld, see u in the 3 years or so.
