Avoiding the overpacking trap: How to master travelling light
Let’s face it: most of us spend the night before a holiday in a packing panic, filling luggage until it’s bursting at the seams and worrying about weight limits. This, just to bring back half of the contents unused or unworn!
Given ever-stricter baggage guidelines from airlines and the inconvenience of overburdening yourself during a trip, the time to master travelling light is now. Discover how to avoid the overpacking trap and how lightening the load can contribute towards smoother and less stressful journeys.
Understanding why we overpack
In a recent survey conducted by Britain’s biggest bingo site tombola, over two thirds of us admit to overpacking clothes but forgetting at least one essential. But why do so many of us have this habit?
Overpacking often stems from uncertainty and the desire to cover all bases. We think that having more options will make dressing easier and ensure we’re prepared for all eventualities. In fact, it can leave us overwhelmed with options – and facing a giant pile of laundry upon return. Brits have a habit of bringing comfort items too, from favourite pillows to teabags! Sometimes, overpacking is simply due to disorganisation, which is how key items end up being left behind, despite taking too much.
The benefits of a ‘less is more’ mindset
Travelling is all about finding freedom – escaping tiring routines, exploring new possibilities and being able to go wherever the wind takes you. Packing less echoes this lightness and practically facilitates stress-free, spontaneous travel, especially if you’re getting around using public transport and on foot or by bike.
Minimising how much you bring also reduces the risk of you getting caught out by baggage weight allowance rules, which can be different from airline to airline, transport to transport, destination to destination, helping to prevent costly fines. Having less means less time is wasted on deliberating and reorganising, too, freeing up more time for fun and relaxation while you’re away.
Planning for your itinerary
Successful packing starts with reviewing your intended itinerary. Even if this is just a skeleton with locations and accommodation, it’s a useful starting point, revealing the number of days you’ll be away and the split between city and countryside. In the days before you go, research the weather in key locations and ensure your wardrobe will provide proper protection and comfort.
Scan your itinerary for key activities that require special gear, and ensure this kit is prioritised when you’re packing. It’s easy to miss things like swimwear and hiking boots when planning your outfits for each day, and specialist equipment is something you cannot afford to be without – and may be unable to replace.
Choosing versatile clothing
Fewer clothes doesn’t necessarily mean less choice if you pack wisely. Creating a mini capsule wardrobe of coordinating pieces that can be paired together in multiple combinations maximises options while minimising how much you carry. It also gives you the flexibility to dress as you want to each day, rather than being confined to pre-arranged outfits.
Place emphasis on neutral colours and include a couple of patterned pieces that will make a statement on special occasions. Ensure garments are suitable for exploration as well as relaxation, made in crease-resistant, flexible and breathable fabrics that give you plenty of room to manoeuvre in any climate or situation.
Utilising tried-and-tested methods
Experienced travellers rely on proven techniques to maximise available space. Rolling clothes reduces creases and gives you at-a-glance visibility of your holiday wardrobe while taking up less space than laying them flat. Pairing shoes in a brick formation – with the fronts touching but just one angled upside down – is another great space-saving method.
Packing cubes help you separate categories of belongings such as toiletries and electronics within your luggage, keeping interiors neat. Compression editions remove excess air, enabling you to store more clothes in the same amount of space. Similarly, you can decant your toiletries into smaller pots and bottles rather than carrying the full-sized products during your holiday.

As you know, blogging changed my life. I left Ireland broke, with no plan, with just a one-way ticket to Thailand
and no money. Since then, I started a blog, then a digital media company, I've made
more than $1,500,000 USD, bought 4 properties and visited (almost) every country in the world. And I did it all from my laptop as I
travel the world and live my dream. I talk about how I did it, and how you can do it too, in my COMPLETELY FREE
Ebook, all 20,000
words or so. Just finish the process by putting in your email below and I'll mail it right out to you immediately. No spam ever too, I promise!
