Granada blew me away, the beauty of the town, the gorgeous surroundings and the cracking day trips, it’s really a hot spot on the backpacking Central American trail. Last week I went Volcano boarding in Leon, Yesterday I hiked up the Mombacho volcano with Tierra Tours and today I joined them on their kayaking tour around Las Isletas.
For the readers who have traveled for a long time themselves, you know how out of shape you can get when you’re on the road. Messed up sleep patterns, new time zones, twenty hour buses it’s tough to stay healthy, so when I have an opportunity to do some active trip then I’m there with open arms, and kayaking is a real killer. My shoulders are still aching.
The tour only costs $25, and last around three hours. I got picked up from my hostel around nine am, taken to the kayaking centre with two other people, we met the guide and then we hit the water.
I was feeling the burn after about ten minutes, so it was going to be a tough but enjoyable couple of hours. The guide takes you where the boars can’t access, kayaking through beautiful jungle savannah, stopping to explain bits and bobs. You stop off at an old colonial fort to rest for twentry minutes, recover a little and truly appreciate the views.
The whole actualy kayaking experience is probably a tad over two hours, it’s beautiful and a great work out. Be sure to bring some water, and some sunscreen – obviously, being me, I didn’t do either of those thing, but they certainly help. For $25 it’s a great activity to fill your day while you’re in Granada, so I hope you guys get to experience it too. Happy travels.
