It’s not a mystery why Croatia is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination, and it’s not just because of all the things to do in Split! The country boasts spectacular architecture, gorgeous beaches, incredible culture and the local people are among the friendliest you will ever encounter.

According to the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, the country has seen rising annual tourist numbers for quite some time. In fact, the peak number of tourists recorded in 2013 was 14 million, marking a significant increase on the 11.8 million peak seen in the previous year.

If you decide you’d like to visit this stunning part of Europe, here are five things you definitely don’t want to miss out on.

Pula

In among the incredible buildings and history of this fascinating city is the Arena of Pula, a grand ancient amphitheater.

This Roman architectural wonder is truly a magnificent structure. Once home to gladiator fights, you are now more likely to see a concert in these ancient walls.

It also has a breathtaking marina and the Brijuni islands are not too far away. The city is famous for fishing and winemaking, so be sure to have a meal in one of the local restaurants!

Plitvice Lakes

Close to the border of Bosnia and Herzegovina, you can find the Plitvice Lakes and National Park. Considering how spectacular the scenery is, it’s amazing that this incredible area of natural beauty has been kept such a secret from most Europeans.

With countless waterfalls cascading down from high cliffs and incredible lakes dotted around this area of wildlife and conservation, you will not want to miss the fairytale charm of the Plitvice.

What’s best is it doesn’t matter what time of year you decide to go. Regardless of the weather, the uncompromising beauty will still shine through at this UNESCO World Heritage site.

Island of Mljet

Another stunning national park not to be missed is on the Island of Mljet. It is a secluded paradise, featuring very few residents, lush vegetation and pristine waters.

Close to the city of Dubrovnik, it is Croatia’s southernmost island and is home to the tiny seaside villages of Pomena, Polace, Sobra and Saplunara.

As well as taking a bike ride or long walk around the island, you can also visit the incredible Odysseus Cave, a place said to have been used as shelter by the legendary Greek king and explorer after being shipwrecked.

If you are searching for Croatia holidays , you’ll want to make sure the Island of Mljet is just one of your visits.

Walls of Dubrovnik

Speaking of Dubrovnik, you should not miss the chance to walk along the ancient walls of this amazing city by the sea.

Built to protect the city from attacks, the walls still stand strong and tall and are truly a sight to behold.

You should also check out the towers and fortresses along the impressive wall, as well as take in the gorgeous harbor that opens up to the Adriatic Sea.

Visit Split

For the perfect blend of stunning buildings, beautiful beaches and delicious local cuisine, Split is the ideal place to be.

Diocletian’s Palace is perhaps the jewel in the crown of this amazing city, built as a majestic retirement residence by Roman emperor Diocletian at the turn of the fourth century.
