Rich History and Heritage
Kansas is a state steeped in history and offers many opportunities to visit historically significant areas, such as the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site in Topeka. Visitors to this site can tour the Monroe Elementary School and learn more about the landmark Supreme Court decision to end racial segregation in public schools via interactive displays and engaging exhibits.
Another must-visit for history buffs is Fort Larned National Historic Site, which tells the stories of soldiers and settlers during the 19th century. This well-preserved frontier fort features guided tours, carefully restored buildings, and riveting living history demonstrations making it another incredible reason to book flights to Kansas City.
For something entirely unique, head along to Dodge City, a town known for its Wild West heritage, which is celebrated by the Boot Hill Museum. Walk back in time on the recreated 1870s Main Street and experience the Old West firsthand while you explore exhibits on cowboys and outlaws.
Stunning Natural Landscapes
Known for its vast plains and expansive prairies, the majority of the state is flat, which allows for wide-open sky views and plenty of outdoor opportunities. The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve near Strong City is a great option for those looking to hike, spot native wildlife such as bison, and even take guided bus tours.
It’s not all flat, of course, and Monument Rocks, also known as the Chalk Pyramids, are so striking as they rise dramatically from the flat landscape and can be seen for miles. Certainly worth a quick photography stop if you’re driving by.
Clinton State Park near Lawrence is the perfect setting for outdoor family adventures, offering many water-based activities such as fishing, swimming, and boating, as well as abundant wildlife, places to camp, and trails that are just asking to be hiked or cycled.

Also famous for barbecue, Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que, with locations in Kansas City and Olathe, is a perennial favorite, known for its mouthwatering ribs, brisket, and pulled pork.
