Mossroam eSIM Review: UNLIMITED DATA! The Best eSIM for Global Travel?

As you guys know, I’ve been to every single country in the world — all 197 of them — and if there’s one thing I’ve learned from the road, it’s this: staying connected while traveling can be a nightmare. My Mossroam eSIM review can hopefully help there (unlimited data in almost every country for under $100 a month). These days, the hotspot and unlimited data is more important than ever for me. I need to make money from my laptop, so 10GB packages etc doesn’t work for me anymore.

In the early days of my travels, I used to collect SIM cards like souvenirs. Every new country meant hunting down a kiosk, fumbling through language barriers, passport scans, top-ups, and wondering if I was being ripped off. Again. Then came eSIMs, and the game changed. But finding one that actually works across the globe, at a decent price, and with real unlimited data? That’s been the holy grail.

Enter Mossroam. When I first heard they offered high-speed data in almost 200 ‘countries’, with unlimited plans for under $119/month, I was skeptical. Too good to be true, right? But after using it through airports, tuk-tuks, deserts, and dodgy mountain passes, I can tell you. This thing just works. It worked for me in Pakistan just last month in fact. And for a long-term traveler like me, that’s everything.

The Pain of Staying Connected Abroad

If you’ve ever landed in a new country and spent the first hour hunting down a SIM card, arguing with airport kiosk staff, or trying to figure out why your roaming charges just cost more than your flight—then you already know. Staying connected abroad has been, for years, a complete pain in the arse.

As someone who’s been to every country in the world—yes, every single one—I’ve experienced just about every variation of this problem. Queuing at the arrivals hall in Sudan for a local SIM, downloading Google Maps in a café in Tajikistan because the airport Wi-Fi was non-existent, paying through the nose for roaming in the Pacific Islands (seriously expensive). It’s a constant struggle.

But things have changed. eSIMs have genuinely changed the game. And out of the many I’ve tested, Mossroam has been the one that finally made me say: “Right. This is it. I’m done faffing around.”

What Is an eSIM Anyway?

Let’s keep it simple. An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM card. Instead of swapping plastic bits every time you cross a border, you scan a QR code and bam—you’re online. No visits to 7-Eleven. No fiddly trays. No more getting lost trying to find a signal.

It works in most modern phones (iPhone XS and above, newer Samsung Galaxies, Pixels etc.). And yes, it feels a bit like magic the first time you use it.

My First Real Trip with Mossroam

I first gave Mossroam a proper trial during a mad trip through the Karakoram Highway, in Pakistan. I landed in Islamabad, fly to Skardu, and planned to drive all the way up through Skardu, Gilgit, and into China.

Usually that would mean at least 2 different SIM cards, three different registration processes, and god knows how many bits of paper with new numbers scribbled on them. Not this time. I scanned the QR code from Mossroam while still in the airport, and by the time I reached baggage claim, I was already online.

Google Maps? Flawless. Booking.com? Loaded instantly. Even uploading a Reel to Instagram while crossing the border? Easy.

What really impressed me was that the data actually stayed strong—not just in the cities, but in the middle of bloody nowhere. Mountain roads, rural villages, even a ferry crossing—solid 4G almost the whole time.

No drops. No throttling. No stress.

Mossroam vs the Competition (Holafly, Airalo, Nomad)

I’ve used all the big players. Holafly has been decent, especially for their unlimited plans. But I’ve noticed speed issues after heavy use. Airalo is cheap but often clunky and very country-specific. Nomad’s okay, but their UX feels like it was built by a retired accountant.

Mossroam? Clean interface. Easy top-ups. Great coverage across over 190 countries. And so far, I haven’t experienced any fake “unlimited” speeds slowing me down.

I’d still recommend checking their coverage map before a trip, but honestly—it’s the first eSIM I’ve considered using long-term.

Who Should Use Mossroam?

  • Digital Nomads: If you’re bouncing between countries, this is a no-brainer. Espeically with no limits on hotspotting to your laptop.
  • Holidaymakers: No more airport queues or dodgy kiosks.
  • Frequent Flyers: Connect before you land.
  • Families: Kids can stay online without burning through your hotspot.

If you travel more than once a year, this saves time, money, and sanity.

Where It Works (and Where It Might Not)

All smooth. Speeds ranged from 4G to full 5G in places like Danang and Bangkok. They claim to support 190+ countries, but I’d still recommend checking your specific destination just to be safe.

If you’re headed to North Korea or Mauritania, maybe pack a backup plan.

Is It Really Unlimited?

This is the big one. Mossroam offers unlimited plans, and in my testing, it seemed pretty legit. I streamed Netflix in HD, uploaded huge video files, and did Zoom calls from my hotel in Islamabad with zero issues.

But—like all “unlimited” plans—there’s probably a fair usage policy in the small print. I haven’t hit a cap yet, but if you’re planning to torrent box sets 24/7, maybe ask them directly.

BEST MOSSROAM PACKAGES?

It’s also their most expensive, but check this out. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen this anywhere before. UNLIMITED PACKAGE (UNLIMITED super fast) in almost every country in the world, for $140 a month. WILD. Currently 20% of too, so now $112.80. INSANE.

Their Thailand package (my home!) is great too. A week unlimited is $15. Such a good price.
