The Fitzwilliam Hotel, Belfast

A 2-week road-trip around Ireland, after finishing a 10-year journey to every country in the world, it was feeling amazing to finally explore both the North and the South of Ireland.

But the 2 weeks were coming to an end and my last stop was Belfast, Northern Ireland’s capital city. There was only one thing for it, I wanted to sign off this trip in style. I decided to check into Belfast’s best hotel, the Fitzwilliam.

When you think of Belfast, the first images that might come to mind are of its rich history, the Titanic, and perhaps the city’s tumultuous past. But step inside The Fitzwilliam Hotel, and you’ll find a different side of this vibrant city. One that’s sophisticated, warm, and undeniably stylish.

My recent stay at this iconic five-star hotel in the heart of Belfast was nothing short of exceptional, and I’m here to tell you why it should be at the top of your list when visiting Northern Ireland’s capital.

Arrival and First Impressions

From the moment you step into The Fitzwilliam Hotel, you know you’re in for something special. The lobby, with its modern design and soft lighting, feels more like an art gallery than a hotel entrance. The staff, dressed in sharp, contemporary uniforms, are immediately welcoming, offering a level of service that strikes the perfect balance between professional and personal. They remember your name, they ask about your journey, and they genuinely seem to care. It’s this warmth, often missing from five-star hotels, that sets The Fitzwilliam apart from the start.

LOCATION

When you’re staying in a lush hotel, the location should match the luxury inside. The Fitzwilliam certainly does that, and this was one of the main reasons why we had chosen to stay here.

Situated on Great Victoria Street, you’re right in the heart of the action. The Grand Opera House is literally next door, so if you’re in town for a show, you can’t get closer. City Hall is just a short stroll away, and if you’re up for some shopping, Victoria Square is within easy walking distance. For those wanting to delve into the city’s history, the Titanic Quarter and the Crumlin Road Gaol are just a short taxi ride away. In essence, The Fitzwilliam Hotel is perfectly placed for exploring Belfast, whether you’re here for business or leisure.

Its a 5 minute walk to Belfast’s beautiful city hall, and just a 10 minute walk to St George’s Market – which is the first stop of my suggestion on things to do in Belfast in one day.

It’s also just a 10 minute walk from the buzzing Cathedral Quarter (home to the Dirty Onion, my favourite bar in Belfast!) so getting home after your night out on the town won’t be a problem,. If you’re just watching a show at the Opera House, the Fitzwilliam is a grand total of about 50m from there, so either way you’re covered.

The Rooms: A Blend of Comfort and Style

The Fitzwilliam offers a variety of rooms, from standard accommodations to luxurious suites, and I had the pleasure of staying in one of their Deluxe Rooms. The moment you enter the room, it’s clear that attention to detail is a priority here. The design is modern yet comfortable, with warm tones, plush fabrics, and just the right amount of minimalist chic to make you feel at home without being overwhelmed by opulence.

The bed, a king-size marvel, is dressed in high-quality linens that make you feel like you’re sinking into a cloud. The lighting is adjustable, allowing you to create the perfect ambiance, whether you’re winding down for the night or getting ready for an evening out. And let’s talk about that bathroom—spacious, with a rainfall shower that’s the perfect remedy after a day of exploring the city. The toiletries are high-end, and there’s even a bathrobe that’s so soft you’ll be tempted to take it home (but don’t, of course).

What I particularly appreciated was the room’s thoughtful touches—USB charging ports by the bed, a Nespresso machine for that essential morning coffee, and a minibar stocked with local products that give you a taste of Northern Ireland’s finest offerings.

BREAKFAST

I’m a sucker for a quality breakfast. Often this is the deciding factor between an average 5* hotel and a truly special 5* and the Fitzwilliam knocks it out of the park. The A La Carte/Buffet combo is always a complete winner when you’re staying in luxury hotels. This way you get the benefit of eating as much as you want as well as the expert chefs they employ. Morning 1 I went for a delicious eggs benedict, the following day I had to experience the ‘Full Irish’ and it didn’t let me down.

PRICES

I didn’t want to rush in and out of Belfast in just 1 day, the way I had with Donegal and Derry, and also I often think that 1 night in a luxury hotel never gives you the full experience. With that in mind I stayed for 2 nights, a Saturday and a Sunday. It was a great place to take my mum too, as it has it’s own stairlifts for seniors.

Promotions (as you can check here) start around £137 per night, I was sharing a twin with my buddy which would mean just £68 a head! On the weekends, the standard room starts around £160 (sharing, £80pp) with breakfast.

Amenities and Extras

For those who like to stay active while on the road, The Fitzwilliam Hotel has a well-equipped gym that’s open 24 hours. It’s not massive, but it has everything you need for a good workout, including cardio machines, free weights, and a selection of resistance equipment.

If relaxation is more your thing, the hotel offers in-room spa services, which is a nice touch, especially after a long day of sightseeing. The concierge service is top-notch, offering everything from restaurant reservations to guided tours of the city.

.And with that, our valet parked campervan was pulled back the front, keys handed over and I headed to visit my mum in Kilkeel, County Down. It was our last leg on the Irish road trip, but what a way to sign out. See you later Fitzwilliam, I’ll be back soon!
