The 10 BEST Adventures in Oman
I have a personal connection with Oman, basing myself there as I tried and failed to visit every country in the world. Being the third-largest country in the Arabian Peninsula, there are some EPIC adventures in Oman. Perhaps don’t copy my biggest one though, 4 days on a cargo ship to Yemen, leaving Oman!
The Sultanate is one of the easiest destinations to reach with plenty of affordable Oman Airlines available. The Arab nation has superb infrastructure and the Omani people are really friendly. It is one of the safest countries to travel alone or with other fellow travelers.
The vast coastline, captivating mountain ranges, rugged canyons, vibrant oases, and vast endless deserts are only a few of the attractions waiting for you in Oman. Here are some of the epic things you can do in this stunning Arabian destination.

Visit the Sultan Qaboos Mosque
The Sultan Qaboos Mosque is one of the most spiritual places for you to visit in all of Oman. It was first opened in 2001 in Muscat. The mosque is known around the world for stunning architecture and detail. Although it may not be as crowded as all the other religious sites, the Sultan Qaboos Mosque is definitely one place that you don’t want to miss on your trip to Oman.
Walk along the Mutrah Corniche
The Mutrah Corniche is a wide promenade that stretches from the Gulf of Oman to the northern edge of Muscat. It is a wonderful way for you to enjoy the city’s scenic waterfront. Don’t forget to visit the stalls at the Muttrah Souq on the way. You can get cups of sweet cardamom tea known as Karak chai from these stalls.
Get fresh fish from Qurayyat
Qurayyat is a small fishing village and a must-visit spot if you are looking to understand more about the fishing culture of the Omani coast. The local fish market is the best spot for visitors to get freshly caught fish. More restaurants and hotels are getting added to the waterfront as a part of the Qurayyat development project.
Watch turtles at the Ras Al Jinz Reserve
Each year thousands of turtles come to the shores of Ras Al Jinz to lay their eggs. The beach has been transformed into a reserve to protect and study these turtles. Watching turtles lay eggs and hatchlings slowly moving to the sea is one magical experience waiting for you to discover at this remote Oman beach.
Stay at Misfat Al Abriyeen
Nothing can give you a more authentic Omanic experience than staying a local stay at Misfat Al Abriyeen. It is a local mud village built into the mountainside of the Al Hamra region. From the roof terrace of the houses here, you can witness the beautiful garden where they grow their bananas and dates.
Explore the Jabal Akhdar Mountains
Filled with spectacular mountain views, the mountain area of Jabal Akhdar offers tourists some incredible moments worth experiencing. You can plan an amazing hike through the mountain trails or do some mountain climbing. Remember to check the weather forecast before visiting. Winter in this mountain area can drop well below zero.
Cool down at Bimmah Sinkhole
Located near the main road near Wadi Shab is the huge naturally shaped swimming pool known as the Bimmah Sinkhole. Many believe that the hole is made by a meteor hit. Whatever the cause of its origin may be, the sinkhole is the best spot in Oman to have a splash and cool down. The crazy blue water is too irresistible.
Fort-hopping in Al Dakhiliya
Located in the northern part of Oman, the Al Dakhiliyah region is located in between the Hajar Mountains and empty desert terrain. It has an important role in the history of Oman. The region is filled with many historically important forts including the Unesco-listed Bahla Fort, Jabreen Castle, Nizwa Fort, and the Bait Al Radidah fortress.
Visit Nizwa Fort
The Nizwa Fort is one of the oldest and most beautiful castles in Oman. Filled with lots of signs from the past, even the smallest artifact inside the fort has many stories to tell about the country’s past and present. From the big main round fort, you can enjoy the great view of the green oasis of palms. The entrance fee is about 5 OMR or 11 USD.
Try shuwa
Dubbed the national food of Oman, shuwa is as important to the Omani people as dates and halwa. This amazing dish is a mouth-watering combination of rice and spiced lamb or goat meat. It is usually served for holidays, festivals, and other celebrations, and is prepared by slow-cooking the ingredients for as long as two days.
