How to Prioritize Your Weight Loss While Traveling & Living Your Best Life

If you’re a health enthusiast, trying to lose weight, or just starting your journey towards healthy living, the idea of going on vacation or traveling for an extended period of time might make you a little nervous. Anyone who’s been on a trip or two in their lifetime knows that vacationing can quickly result in you gaining weight. The temptation of delicious foods, alcoholic beverages, and sedentary activities like lounging by the pool or beach certainly don’t help.

Is it possible to remain healthy and shed pounds while traveling? You’d be surprised just how easy it is. Below are some recommendations on how to do this.

Book a Hotel with a Gym
Choosing hotels with a gym can be a great solution to help you maintain your weight loss goals while traveling. Hotel gyms can range in size depending on which hotel you stay in and come equipped with exercise machines, dumbbells, towels, and plenty of water to keep you hydrated.

Choose Foods Wisely
Exotic cuisines can be especially tempting for those who are trying to lose weight while traveling. There’s nothing wrong with trying some things, and even indulging in food items that aren’t necessarily nutritious for you. The trick is, however, to balance it with wise food decisions throughout the day. A healthy diet for men and women should include lean meats, vegetables, fruits, and healthy fats. Keep this in mind, so that if you do decide to go to a cuisine that may not always offer a nutritious menu, you can be sure that you choose well-balanced breakfast and lunch items beforehand.

Sneak in Activity
Swimming is a fun and active way to sneak in some exercise while traveling. Whether you choose to swim at the hotel or in the ocean, swimming is a great way to burn calories while soaking up the sun. In addition, try to find a routine to keep you find time for a swim before exploring your destination. For example, try to wake up a little early or enjoy some you time every evening just before turning in for the night.

Make Your Own Food
Another way to avoid indulging in too many food items you shouldn’t have – make your own food. If you’re fortunate enough to nab a room with a mini kitchen in it, you can save yourself some money and bad calories by making your own dishes. Find a local grocery store to purchase fresh protein and produce and prep your meals in the hotel. You don’t even have to put much effort into it as you can simply plug in the crockpot (they have portable sizes) throw something in it, and come back to the hotel later for a healthy meal.

Choose to Walk
Rental cars are nice when you’re traveling long distances, but if you plan on exploring a town going on foot is your best option. Find shopping centers or downtown areas to visit and walk a few blocks to burn some of those calories. Museums and aquariums are great ideas for tourists who love to walk and sightsee at the same time.

Limit Alcohol Consumption
Alcohol and vacation seem to go hand in hand. Whether it’s sitting on the beach sipping a mai tai or bar hopping in Mexico popping tequila shots, the idea of drinking and having a good time has been around forever. There’s certainly nothing wrong with a drink here and there, but be mindful of how much you’re consuming. Alcohol is packed with sugar and too much sugar can add calories and put you at risk for diabetes. Plan one or two nights during your vacation for drinking and limit your drinks to one or two a day.

Going on vacation is all about taking a break from the everyday routines. This concept, however, causes some travelers to allow a thing like their health to fall by the wayside. Since it can be hard to bounce back if you fall off the “health wagon”, it’s best you stick to a routine.  As you can see, it really isn’t that hard to stay healthy. These few tips can go a long way in keeping you happy, energized, and in shape no matter where you are.
