Driving to Other Countries? Know These Strange Driving Laws from Around the World

Driving a car in a foreign land can often be one of the best ways to explore the nation. With this being said it is essential that you have a firm understanding of what the rules of the road are. Each country has its own challenges, and Strange Driving Laws, when it comes to traffic safety, and therefore have different laws which will apply to drivers. To reinforce the importance of learning the local highways laws, here are some examples of strange laws from around the world, which you may never have expected.

Driving in Borneo
Strange Driving Laws

Queensland Horses

In Australia there Strange Driving Laws, including one which deals with the treatment of horses in Queensland. The Astor Legal team knows the law too well regarding ‘restive’ horses. A fine may be incurred if a driver fails to move out of the way of a restive horse and turn their engine off. The driver cannot move until the horse has calmed down or until they are sure that their engine sound will not aggravate the horse.

Eating Whilst Driving – Cyprus

Driving long distance may be hungry work but if you are in Cyprus then you will need to think again before you unwrap that gyros. Here on the island if you are caught by the local police eating or drinking anything then you could easily get slapped with an €85 fine. This may or may not be a heavily enforced law, but there really is no point running the risk.

Drink Drive Passenger – Japan

Not a Strange Driving Laws, but Drink driving is never acceptable and in just about every country around the world it is completely illegal, and with very good reason. In Japan however the authorities take this a step further and will also punish any passengers who are inside the car with a drink driver. No matter if you are 100% sober, you could still find yourself in trouble and hit with a fine.

Breathalyzer Kits – France

To continue with this thread of drink driving, in France it is a legal requirement that drivers carry their own personal breathalyzer kits. If you are renting a vehicle in France then you should have this provided for you, but it is always worth double checking with the rental company.

Public Cursing – Maryland

You don’t just have to learn about new highway laws when traveling outside a country, because even crossing state lines could see you facing new laws to follow. For example in the US state of Maryland, a Strange Driving Laws, is that it’s actually illegal to publicly curse. No matter if someone cuts you off or enrages you in some other way, you have to remain tight lipped. A fine of $100 could certainly have your name on it if you are caught shouting expletives to another driver.

Headlights – Sweden

In Sweden, no matter the time of day or the weather conditions, it is a legal requirement that you keep your headlights on at all times. Interestingly, whilst there is a legal obligation to keep headlights on for 24 hours, some parts of the country don’t actually see darkness for the entire month of June. Regardless, those headlights must stay on.

Always be sure that you have taken the time to learn the local highway laws before you leave home, you never know when to look out for Strange Driving Laws.
