What is Oktoberfest?
Guys guys guys, it’s only the biggest BEER festival in the world! It’s been running for over 200 years and attracts more than 5 million visitors each September/October. Now that’s a lot of hangovers! Originally it began to celebrate the marriage of a Prince and Princess. But since the beer heavyweights got involved in the late 19th century it’s been a cultured excuse to get drunk and be merry.
Today, Oktoberfest is all about beer, music, traditional food, and good company. With over 5 million visitors flocking to Munich every year, it’s the ultimate destination for anyone who loves a good time.
When is Oktoberfest?
Believe it or not, in September (and October).
Normally September 15th to the first week of October.
Oktoberfest opening hours
Monday to Friday the opening hours are 9am to 11.30pm.
On weekends they don’t open until 10am. That still leaves plenty of time to guzzle a fair few beers so pace yourselves. I’m talking to you, gentlemen!
Where Is Oktoberfest Held?
The main Oktoberfest event takes place at the Theresienwiese (often called “Wiesn”) in Munich, Bavaria. This massive festival ground hosts 14 main beer tents, each run by a different brewery, as well as smaller tents and a lively fairground.
Getting There
Munich’s public transport system makes it easy to reach Theresienwiese. Take the U-Bahn (U4 or U5) to the Theresienwiese station, or use the bus or tram. If you’re staying outside Munich, consider taking a train or organized transport.
Do I Need To Reserve A Tent at Oktoberfest?
NOTE: If you don’t have a tent reservation, which, as a traveler you probably won’t, because:
- It requires a lot of forward planning
- it requires you to reserve a whole table which can prove very pricey
Reservation Tips
If you’re a traveler, chances are you won’t have a reservation. That’s okay—just plan strategically:
• Weekends: Arrive by 10:00 AM to grab a spot.
• Weekdays: Aim for 3:00 PM to avoid the biggest crowds.
Reservations require booking an entire table, which can be expensive and challenging for solo travelers or small groups. If you’re flexible, finding a seat early in the day is usually manageable.
What to Wear at Oktoberfest
For the full experience, consider dressing in traditional Bavarian attire:
• Men: Lederhosen (leather shorts with suspenders)
• Women: Dirndls (traditional dresses)
You’ll find plenty of shops in Munich selling or renting these outfits if you don’t bring your own.
What’s the craic at Oktoberfest? What’s it Really like?
Oktoberfest is a feast for the senses, combining traditional Bavarian culture with a vibrant, party-like atmosphere.
- Beer: Served in 1-liter steins (costing around €12–€15).
- Music: Each tent has live bands playing German drinking songs and international hits.
- Food: Feast on pretzels, roast chicken, sausages, and other Bavarian delicacies.
While most attendees are German, about 20% are international visitors. The mood is infectious, with people from around the world sharing laughs, toasts, and a few (or many) beers.
My Personal Experiences at Oktoberfest
The craic (Irish word, the prospect of all this drinking brings me back to my country of birth!) is that while statistically, the majority of attendees are German, there’s a significant proportion of foreigners (up to 20%). People are generally in an awesome mood. The booze doesn’t come cheap though (up to $15 a drink!). So bring plenty of cash.
Each of the main tents provides some traditional German music and a lot of boozy drinking songs so expect a raucous time! If you find yourself wandering around Germany like the drunkard that you are, and fall over, make sure you have your travel insurance sorted. And just ask the buxom Helga carrying twenty steins, I’m sure she’ll find your drunken slur hugely appealing and help you out graciously.
