Arguably the fitness capital of the world, Melbourne has world-class sport facilities that can cater any sport you can imagine. Its the home of many popular sport events like football, rugby, cricket, motor sports and not to forget their most popular Australian Rules Football. Melbourne has got more gyms than you can shake a bulging bicep at and the sport fanatics there never miss a game in their life!  So put your game face on and go through my top 5 picks for the sports you don’t want to miss, whether as a spectator or a competitor:
Cricket
Cricket season in Melbourne runs from October to March. One of the greatest sports stadiums is found in Melbourne which is the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). For the last couple of years, it has hosted international games and test matches and some Australian cricket competitions. Reservation for tickets are always available at the MCG and it can accommodate over 100, 00 sport fanatics, wow! I watched some Aussie rules here a year or two ago, when i found some cheap flights to Melbourne, brilliant atmosphere.

Football (‘soccer’ and AFL)
Football (the sport you use your feet to kick a ball in) season in Melbourne is during the autumn and winter from October to February. Football is actually the most popularly ‘played’ sport in Melbourne but it never hits big in the media as it has been given little attention. Weekly tournaments are held to train beginners and enhance their knowledge about football. The first recorded football match happened in Sydney in the 1880’s. What we know as football though is often mistaken as Australian Rules Football run by the Australian Football League (AFL) . The Aussies go much crazier for their footy (AFL) than my footy, where people flock to see the game from across the country. Australian Rules was invented in the south and they’re very proud of that fact!

Rugby
Rugby fans are very loyal to their sport and it also became one of Melbourne’s most popular sport. International matches are held regularly in the MCG. The season for Rugby sport is between the months of April and September for both Ruby league and Ruby Union, although league takes all the main headlines across most of Australia, union is pretty popular in Melbourne.

Tennis
The Australian Open Tennis Championship is held in the Melbourne Park National Tennis Centre every year. It’s one of the major tennis events on the planet, and attracts the best tennis players in the world. Although the championship is only held every January, the game is hugely popular all year round . You can also find many tennis courts in Melbourne open for the public, some large parks and huge gardens.
Yachting
This expensive past time for locals and visitors in Melbourne is a must to try. Hundreds of yachts are seen sailing in Melbourne’s Philip Bay, where the rich and famous kickback. The season for yacthing is between September to March. This sport can utilize your navigation skills as you venture out the sea with only knowledge on your side. It may be slightly outside the backpacking budget but it’s worth a visit just to see the yachting events in Philip Bay to experience how magnificent the yachts can be.
