Autumn in Europe is can be a magical place, where temperate weather meets the fall festival season with wine, food and fun. A smart, conscientious traveler packs light, taking only the essentials so the journey can be well spent sight-seeing, trying new cuisine, and enjoying the culture of the places you visit. Keep a few versatile items in your suitcase to ensure your wardrobe is as functional as it is fun.

Every journey starts with a good pair of walking shoes. A stylish pair of orthotic shoes or sandals can keep you looking as well as feeling good. A great deal of travel is spent exploring on foot, so it’s important to wear comfortable shoes that won’t hurt your feet. Buy a pair of orthotic shoes for your trip this fall. Coming in many different styles, the specialized footwear will enable you to stay comfortable as well as stylish overseas.

Try a nice shoulder bag for all of your essentials. Choose something light which won’t weigh you down, as well as keep you from overdoing it when it comes to how you fill it. You’ll want an everyday bag for room for your passport, currency, guidebooks, and other items such as a water bottle or small souvenirs. Safety from theft is also a consideration for your shoulder bag—something you can keep a firm grip on, but also something recognizable you can describe in the event you lose track of it. Always remember to keep a copy of your passport and part of your money elsewhere, perhaps in the lining of your suitcase or in your hotel room safe if you have one.

A summer scarf can be a fall friend. A versatile yet fashionable piece that works with your travel outfits is desirable. A summer scarf can be an easy way to finish your look without being too bulky. It can also bring a pop of color to an otherwise muted ensemble. Don’t feel limited to fall colors, though, check out the pastels, patterned and deep blue scarves at ETSY to express your worldly persona.

Keep your eyes sharp with a good pair of sunglasses. Even though summer has ended, you may find yourself squinting in the sun without some shades on hand. UV protection is ideal in sunny locales so that you can look where you’re going while keeping your vision safe. An inexpensive pair that frames your face can be flattering. You may also want to bring a hat along that will keep the sun out of your eyes, as well as keep your head warm as the air gets cooler.

A little black dress is never a miss. Always bring a more formal outfit should a special occasion arise, whether a night on the town or an invitation to dinner with a new friend. Whether it’s something you need to hang in your hotel closet to a synthetic that you can roll in your travel bag without wrinkling, you’ll want to bring something you can break out for an event to remember.
