From the fascinating cultural diversity and the amazing cuisine to the paradise beaches and fantastic underwater life, a Caribbean getaway is the perfect adventurous getaway and something that should be on everyone’s bucket list.
So whether you are planning to take a cruise to Jamaica or laze on a beach in the Bahamas, this guide will take you through some of the best spots to visit, and help you plan the perfect Caribbean vacation.
St Barts is one of the most popular destinations in the Caribbean, particularly for couples and honeymooners, and it is not difficult to see why. It has all the charms of a tropical Caribbean paradise combined with a European influence that gives it an effortless air of elegance and sophistication.
So whether you are kicking back on one of the fourteen exquisite beaches that fringe the island, or trying out the dining options in one of the exceptional beachside restaurants, St Barts offers a wonderful vacation experience.
It is easy to take a cruise to Jamaica. In fact many popular cruise lines port here and it’s easy to see why. The buzzing, vibrant heart and soul of the Caribbean, Jamaica is a superb destination to really get to grips with the amazing culture of the islands, and to find out what makes them tick. Jamaica’s musical culture is staggering, with Bob Marley its high priest, and an extraordinary array of musicians and new sounds everywhere you turn.
The island itself is a pretty beautiful spot, with verdant banana forests, soaring mountains and deep azure waters. It is also one of the best places to try the best of Caribbean cuisine, with Jamaican specialities like jerk chicken, curry goat and rich fish stews.
Although technically not officially part of the Caribbean, the Bahamas deserves a mention when considering an island getaway. Made up of over 700 tiny, glorious islands, this is a truly delightful spot, with a subtropical climate, endless sandy cays, and jaw droppingly beautiful coral reefs just below the surface of the crystal clear waters. The Bahamas offers a splendid array of experiences and sights to see. Nassau town exudes grit, funk and authenticity, the mangroves of Andros are an astonishing adventure into a world of natural wonders, and Eleuthera offers pink sand beaches and swimming wild pigs!
Although most places in the Caribbean have been well-discovered, the Dominican Republic is about as close to a hidden gem as you can get. While there are plenty of upmarket resorts and luxury hotels like Bahia Principe, there are also hundreds of secluded coves and palm-fringed beaches off the beaten path, where you’ll feel like you are the only one on the island. The Samana Peninsula, for example, is a little slice of heaven, and from December to March the waters of Samana Bay heave with humpback whales who migrate there to mate!
Turks and Caicos
The forty islands of Turks and Caicos are all about pure opulence and total relaxation. With over two hundred miles of perfect white sand, this is the ultimate place to indulge in some serious sun worshipping. The islands are surrounded by some breathtakingly beautiful coral reefs too, making this a wonderful destination for snorkelers and scuba divers as well. The Turks and Caicos are made of couples and honeymooners, with an array of exquisite boutique hotels, as well as romantic cabins and bungalows on several private cays. Getting away from it all with your special someone has never felt this good.
