I’m a huge fan of freestyle traveling, don’t sort anything out, just arrive, go with the flow. What the worst that can happen? And over the years, this technique has done me very proud indeed. However, sometimes you need something different, something a little more upmarket.
Traveling so often, every couple of months I begin to get a little ‘traveled-out’, but I don’t let it stress me out. I’m well aware it’s a passing phase, but now I know how to deal with it. If my body, mind, traveling spirit don’t wanna rough it in another 10 bed dorm, or find another mosquito ridden shack for $5 a night, now I know where to turn.
I have been all through Europe this year, and it’s been epic but I need a break before I finished my European adventure, so I booked some flights back ‘home’ to Thailand but I couldn’t face Khao San road, I wanted a little luxury to rejuvenate the vagabond in me, and that’s where Roomorama came in.
For those of you who don’t know Roomorama, it’s an accommodation website where you can find awesome places to stay for low, low prices. I’m not talking about another generic hotel booking website, this is more like a more comfortable version of couchsurfing!
You can find rooms, sometimes in people’s apartments, sometimes townhouses, and also sometimes promotions on serviced apartments etc, and they come cheap cheap cheap. I was back in my city, Bangkok and I wanted to rewind from all my travels so I found a serviced apartment on there, send an availability request, got confirmed in 48 hours and booked. And even better, I can pay via paypal (you know it feels like it’s free when you do that, right!?)
My ‘room’ cost me about $50 a night, but it was a living room, kitchen, huge master bedroom and bathroom, and the place had a gym, jacquzzi, swimming pool and sauna – not that’s value for money! I stayed for 6 nights before I repacked my backpack and hit the road again, fully rejuvenated and ready to chase down my 100 country mark (90+ now!)
Although they asked me to promote their service, after this awesome experience I used Roomorama again actually, this time for Oktoberfest in Munich. People were complaining about places all being sold out, crazy expensive etc, I logged on, sent a request and my friend and I split a $70 a night room 3 weeks before the event! $35 each for our own awesome place, when hostel dorms run at more than $50 a head during Oktoberfest, Roomorama I officially love you!
