The annual Kentucky derby festival is just more than a horse race. It gives everyone(mostly the women) the opportunity to dress up in their best attire, don a big colourful hat and parade around in the very latest fashion. While not everyone can attend the world famous horse race in person, you will be able to find a plethora of derby paries scattered around nearby on the actual day of the races. A lot of people that live in Kentucky will host their own party, and if you’d like to do the same, then here are some tips that you can follow.
First of all, you will need to send out invitations to all your friends and relatives to let them know the time and venue of the party. Make sure that they know what to expect. The last thing you want is someone coming along thinking that it’s a regular old party. So make sure you inform everyone that the theme is the Kentucky Derby. You can find invite cards that have an iconic hat on them, or even invites with the official Kentucky Derby logo on them. Ask attendees to come dressed as if they were going to the actual race itself. This will all add to the atmosphere of the party.
On the day of the party, provide racing forms and pieces of blank paper for your guests as they arrive. For those guests who have a smartphone on hand they can also bet on the Kentucky Derby. This will make the fun all the more enjoyable for everyone as they watch the races on the tv. Before each race starts, collect the betting slips and keep a record of who choose what horse to win each race. At the end of the night, you can award a prize to the guest who correctly guessed the winner of the most races.
Throughout the day you can serve up some Southern food on your Kentucky Derby novelty plates! Have food items like fried chicken, crab cakes, pecan pie and steak on the menu. The best way would be to provide all of this in a buffet style so that people can mix and match what they like. It keeps everyone socialising with each other as well.
At the end of the day/night, you can also award prizes to the best dressed and best hat.
Why don’t you even keep the party going afterward by sipping a few of those delicious Southern cocktails!
