Heading off on a road trip is one of the best ways to go traveling, it offers you the chance to spend some quality tome with friends or family, the freedom to explore and the flexibility to do what you want, whenever you want. The key to a successful road trip is in the preparation, both in terms of how you will stay entertained, and making sure that your car is fit for purpose, and ready to take on the open road.

If you are planning a road trip this year, here are some top tips on how to get your preparations perfect, for maximum enjoyment.

Car and Maintenance

The last thing that anyone wants on a road trip is to run into car difficulty and whilst you can never completely remove the risk of this happening, you can take steps to minimize that risk. To begin with you should check all of the car’s fluids including brake fluid, screen wash and oil, as well as power steering fluid if your car has the feature. You must also make sure that you test all of the lights on the car, to ensure that they are fully working. Finally you must ensure that you check the tires, make sure that they are properly inflated and that they have sufficient tread.  If you have concerns about the general health of your car, take it to a local mechanic for a once over, to give you peace of mind.

Keeping everyone going on a long trip is not always easy, so planning the in-car entertainment is going to be key. In the weeks running up to the road trip, you should be looking to create some fun playlists to listen to in the car, sing-a-long tracks are always a good idea. For passengers you should also think about downloading some games on devices like phones and tablets, and consider picking up a portable DVD player so that all the passengers can enjoy a movie during the trip. Take a look online for the best portable DVD player for your needs. Finally you ought to think about packing a frisbee or a ball in the back of the car, for when you need to stop for a long time, these can be a great way to kill time.

Route Planning

Although the fun of a road trip is in the uncertainty and the freedom, it does make sense to at least have a basic idea of which direction you are headed. Give yourself some leeway by all means, but make sure that you have a destination or two pencilled in so that you can plan your trip in terms of gas, eating etc.

Food and Drink

It always makes sense to have a cool box in the back of the car, with some drinks and snacks in them. Naturally you will probably be stopping at restaurants and stores along the way, but it does no harm having some supplies in the back should you need them.

With these simple preparation tips, you can ensure that your road trip is the best that it can be.
