Football is the world’s most famous sport, you’d be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t know the name of at least the top players in the world. When I a traveling around the world I often find myself in situations when I can’t speak the language of the taxi driver taking me to my hotel. That is not a problem however if I utter the words Liverpool or Barcelona, instantly you have a common language and the taxi driver will often say his favourite team followed by his favourite players.
When it comes to derby it doesn’t matter what language you speak because nearly everyone can name at least one of world footballs best derbys. When one of them is on tv I always make sure I grab a Coral promo code and have a flutter, mostly on the number of red cards that will be dished out!
See if you agree with my list of the best derbys in world football.
You’d have to say that this derby has been one of the most exciting over the past decade. It’s played between two European superpowers based in Spain – Barcelona and Real Madrid. This is the match to watch if you want to see the best of world football go head to head. Millions of people around the globe make sure they watch this game because the level of football is so high. Granted that some players can be a bit theatrical, but in the past we’ve watched Messi and Ronaldo share the same pitch – that’s something you’ll tell the grandkids about!
The North West Derby
When you think of a derby you usually picture two english football teams from the same city, that’s not the case with the north west derby. It is the biggest rivalry in English football and possibly in Europe. Nothing matches the atmosphere when Manchester United and Liverpool cross the white line and battle it out. They’re the two most successful clubs in english football and have amassed 121 trophies collectively. It’s a match never to be missed, full of talent and lots of fiery battles.
The Old Firm Derby
The old firm match is hotly contested between the two Scottish footballing giant, Rangers and Celtic. Most people don’t watch the Scottish league but when these two are playing the viewing figures are ski high. These two clubs genuinely don’t like each other and in recent years unfortunately the biggest talking points are the mad challenges and scuffles on the pitch. A great game and one can’t help get goosebumps watching it even if you’re not supporting a team.
Now it’s your turn. I’d love to hear about what you think is the best derby in the world, I’m sure it’ll cause quite an online discussion. All you have to do is pop your thoughts in the comment section below. I’m really looking forward to reading what you all think.
