3 Things You Should Know Before You Rent a Motorhome

While a lot of people think that renting a motorhome is like renting a car, they’re both very different experiences. The process for renting a motorhome is more complicated than many might expect. However, when you know what you’re looking for and what to expect, renting the right motorhome for your family vacation becomes much easier. Here are some things you have to take into consideration before you rent your first motorhome.

Prepare for Acclimation Time

Before you take your camper on the road, you’ll have to get used to it first. Even if you’re used to large trucks or minivans, you’ll soon realise that motorhomes come with their own set of challenges.

The best place to practice would be a large open space, like an empty parking lot for instance. You’ll have to learn how to use the mirrors, back up properly, turn corners and park. You should also take somebody else along with you and practice hand signals in case you have to back up in tight spaces.

Know Exactly What Type of Camping You Intend to Do

The type of camping you’re going to do will affect which type of vehicle you should be looking for. Were you thinking of roughing it out in the outback? Then you may need a travel trailer, pop tent, or gazebo (understand more here). Were you thinking of staying on a campsite or going glamping? Then an Airstream or a Big Class A might be a better idea. Most rental companies will have multiple types of vehicles, it’s up to you to know in advance which ones will fit your needs the best.

How Much Moving Will You be Doing?

You should know that the bigger the vehicle, the more fuel it will consume. This will make a huge difference if you were thinking of going on a cross country trip. Many people aren’t aware of how much energy a big motorhome can consume until they actually drive one.

If you were looking for a rig that was more like a house than a car, then you should look at a unit with as many amenities as possible. You may want to look for a unit with solar panels if you were thinking of doing some off the grid camping for instance.

If you were thinking of doing a lot of moving, then something like a campervan hire might be a better idea. Unless you have a huge budget, going with a mid-sized or smaller vehicle is usually a better option and you’d be surprised at how comfy smaller units can be.

Before you pick any vehicle, make sure that you get the specs of any vehicle you were thinking of renting so that you can get an estimate of how much you can expect to spend on gas for the whole trip.

Renting a motorhome is much simpler when you come prepared. Make sure that you do your homework, understand your needs and know what to expect before you make your final choice.
