The Advantages of Combining a Love of Sport with Travel

If you love to travel and love sport, you may have previously kept the two passions separate. Maybe you go to the game most weekends but then escape from it all for a couple of weeks each year with a holiday in the sun. But have you ever considered combining the two? A holiday with a sporting theme or at least a couple of sports-related excursions can offer many benefits. Here are just a few.
Discover new places
If you plan your holiday with sports activities in mind, you mind find yourself looking at new destinations. Instead of a week on the beach in Lanzarote, you might find yourself watching a soccer derby in Buenos Aires while also discovering the food and culture of the city. Or you might take in a Stadium tour at Barcelona’s Camp Nou Stadium before exploring the architectural works of Antoni Gaudi. You might even discover that Barcelona has beaches to rival any on the Mediterranean coast.
If you are a fan of a top soccer team that plays regularly in international competitions, you can plan your trips around which teams they are drawn against. You could find yourself anywhere from Turkey or Azerbaijan to Norway – it all depends on the draw.

Golf fans have thousands of courses around the world to choose from and there are plenty of top tournaments in beautiful locations where you can watch your heroes in action.
Meet new people
If you are a foreigner in far-flung land watching your favourite team, the chances are you will encounter like-minded souls. There is nothing better than making new friends with a common bond on the road. Whether you like soccer, cricket, rugby or any major sport, you can be sure that you won’t be the only one who has travelled from afar. So seek out fellow fans and form new friendships.
See the superstars up close
There are sports players who only come around once in a generation. Going to a game as part of your vacation could offer the chance to see the superstars up close and personal. Maybe you’d love to see Tiger Woods strolling up the 18th green in a major or watch Rafa Nadal perform on the clay courts of Roland Garros. Or maybe you would prefer to witness Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo tearing through a defence in Champions League soccer game. Grab the chance before it is gone.
Getting up close is also great for those of you who love to wager on sports. You can get a real feel for the momentum of a game when you are sat in the stands. With lots of live in-play betting markets available on soccer games and other sports, you can even wager live at the game – providing you can get good Wi-Fi!
Have the party of a lifetime
Instead of just taking in a game, why not go the whole hog and attend a major tournament. When a country hosts a major event like the Olympics or the World Cup Finals, there is always a party atmosphere. You can travel to different parts of the country to attend events and soak up the atmosphere along the way. Once again, this is a great chance to meet people and not just those who support the same team as you. For example, an Olympic Games or soccer World Cup attracts fans from all over the world – so you never know who you will bump into.
